Meet Kristine McPherson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristine McPherson.

Hi Kristine, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.

Hi I’m Kristine McPherson and I am a marketing strategist from Brooklyn, NY. Over the last decade I have worked in many areas of the marketing and advertising industry. My journey started as a student at Carnegie Mellon University where I received my Bachelor’s in Statistics and continued on to complete a Masters in Professional Writing. I always wanted to tell the human story behind technical numbers and these degrees allowed me to explore both areas. After graduating, I started working with advertising agencies and brands to develop digital strategies for media campaigns. As I dove into the marketing world, I started to notice the importance of audience engagement and how metrics impact campaigns. This insight led me to focus on the complexities of audience strategy. I started to study behaviors across media channels and began researching signals to identify targets for effective marketing. Alongside these larger strategic projects, I also worked with individuals and start-up businesses to consult on growth and digital strategies at a different scale. These brands included HBO Max, Juvia’s Place, Universal Pictures, USA Network, Jet Blue, Burlington Stores, Enterprise Rental Cars, Staples, as well as individual brand marketing for former NBA player and CBA Champion Sonny Weems. With these experiences under my belt, I now have the chance to share some of my findings through workshops and speaking events focused on audience strategy and planning.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?

The road wasn’t always as clear, but each opportunity has helped me find clarity in my career. When I worked on the agency side, I was able to see how brands and businesses operate. Moving from that world to the publisher side, I was responsible for helping agency teams plan the best strategy. Finally on the brand side, I worked in the weeds to not only understand the business details but also make sure all of the internal and external stakeholders were executing the plan. The hardest part during my career was understanding what approach works best for me. Some of the time, I struggled finding the right fit because my heart wasn’t in the projects. But when you’re working at a company or completing a project, you have to always put your best foot forward, and continue to deliver. When I look back now, I realize there was always a common thread in each of the roles I had. It just took some focus to see it.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

I love to create things! I enjoy the feeling of finding inspiration that sparks an idea and then bringing the concept to life. Whether it’s a photoshoot or a product launch, there is always some form of marketing that exists in everything I do. I also really enjoy working with people to help understand brand stories and strategize to best content to engage their audience. For brands in e-commerce, the goal is to drive sales. So that means thinking about creative messaging, coming up with unique content ideas and deciding the best place to reach their audience. For personal brands the technique is much different. The strategy includes shopping for looks and scheduling photoshoots on set, a personal favorite, and submitting content to magazines for review.

I am most proud of the fact that I realized nothing is impossible. Throughout this journey, I have stepped into roles I never thought I would, including editorial video production, website coding, and visual design. With each of these roles, I have worked hard to learn new skills and pushed myself beyond what I thought was possible. By expanding my knowledge, it has opened new opportunities and set me apart from those who are focused on a single industry or skill.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?

The city is an open playground. No matter what you are here for, you can find a group of people who are into the same thing. Coming from NY, I have had a lot of people give their opinions, but being here and exploring has allowed me to go beyond the fairytales of LA. There’s so much more to tap into. Going from the beach to a mountain hike and maybe stopping to shop and eat in between is nice to have at your fingertips. However, coming from NY and being Caribbean, my family is Guyanese, one of my first adventures was to find Caribbean food, so that has definitely been one of the biggest struggles. Nevertheless, I’m slowly finding places to have that feeling of home in my new city.
