Today we’d like to introduce you to Bo Nawacharee.
Hi Bo, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My interest in storytelling and people have always been a part of me since I was young. The story of how I started doing anything about it was kinda funny though. In my undergrad year around 2012 or something, I started going on the street with my friend and start interviewing random people. They would lucky-draw a question and then tell us stories in regard to that. I think that’s related to how I always have a fascination in tapping into personal stories and experiences. That then leads to film school, then making friends, and keep making work. A very simple path, I think… I just keep making works and trying to connect with more people.
Now I’m still exploring those relationships and stories. Whether it be narrative films, experimental films, dance films, or even commercials. Conceptualizing the works, discussing and planning with collaborators, and directing is something that always makes me so energetic and happy. I’m very grateful now to have a chance to collaborate with many talented people internationally. I’m also teaching at a university now too! So that’s very exciting. I love challenging my students to think beyond the surface levels. and the experiences in class have been very inspiring.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh no, not at all, it’s never a smooth road in this path I think. I mean I’m happy for anyone who may have an easy path, but a journey of anyone who works in a creative field is often filled with self-doubt, weekly existential crisis, and creative blocks once in a while. So all of those was (also still is) obviously a part of what I’m doing. I’m lucky to have great friends and people who can give me comfort along the way though. Those are highly essential in my opinion.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My three short films revolving around female identity have had an honour to be screened and awarded at film festivals internationally. It features topics that may deemed a little difficult to tap upon on the daily basis like the sexualized and fetishized stereotype of Thai women, or female violence, or an exploration of identity, romance, and sexuality.
Pieces and bits, talks about the sexualized stereotyping of Thai women, was screened at Austin Asian American film festival and Toronto Independent Film Festival. It was selected as a best student film and honourable mention at Long Story Shorts Romania and was awarded best women empowerment film at the New Wave short film festival Germany.
Three, a hybrid experimental documentary short, was screened at Asolo Art film festival Italy, Oaxaca international film festival Mexico, Blow Up Art House international film festival Chicago, AVIFF Cannes France, and nominated for best experimental film at Indie Short Fest LA.
And the latest film in that theme is Fall Into My Palm, an experimental film about two people stuck in a relationship, exploring vacancy, time, space, and suffocation. It was a finalist at the Toronto Independent film festival of Cift and was awarded best experimental film at Hong Kong Art House film festival, best women short and best microfilm at Independent Short Awards LA.
There are other works I made that differ from these as well but these are the subjects that I’ve always been very much immersed in and drawn to very personally.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Is it weird to say my honesty? I do feel like I’m trying to be truthful to my feelings and opinions as much as possible when it comes to making works or giving feedback on works. I don’t want to pretend or say or endorse something I disagree with. Or even make works about topics I don’t care about. That, and maybe being persevere. I can’t say much but I can always say I’m trying.
