Today we’d like to introduce you to Ju Konye Mbamah.
Hi Ju Konye, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been into photography since I was a kid, but I never really had enough confidence in myself to express my love for it since creativity wasn’t really encouraged in my household. I ended up going to college for nursing and I hated it. I knew it wasn’t for me. I realized I actually just did it to please my mom. So, in 2018, I started doing photoshoots here and there, but it was honestly just little stuff. I was still finding confidence in myself. Some years go by and boom, the pandemic happened. The lockdown gave me the time to really look within and give photography my all. I moved back home and started to take myself more seriously, which allowed me to become more confident in myself and my work. Looking back and seeing how far I’ve come, it’s honestly pretty cool. But I know I haven’t even reached my full potential yet.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
A smooth road? Nope. Confidence was always my biggest thing. Early on, I would have this bad habit of comparing my work to other artists who have been doing for this years. I just always needed to remind myself “comparison is the thief of joy”. The road is still bumpy by the way probably won’t ever be perfect but I’m here for it all.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a film photographer, I specialize in catching people in their element. What I’m most proud of is being able to showcase beautiful black people in a positive light.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Social media and email are always the best way to reach me, I’m always eager to work with others
