Meet Kim Genkinger

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Genkinger.

Hi Kim, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
This past year, I moved back to Los Angeles after living overseas for six and a half years. Like so many other people, COVID put the brakes on life as I knew it, and I found myself with a choice: sit and wait or shift and do something with the free time and space the pandemic presented. That’s literally the genesis of Sit in the City: LA meditation activity cards. One morning, I woke up with the words Sit in the City in my head, registered the URL, and followed my intuition to start creating. A 15-month labor of love, I created a deck of cards that is basically an homage to the city I had lived in and loved before moving abroad. The decks COVID influences are clear—the concept embraced social distancing, emotional and mental support, and connection to place.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldn’t necessarily call bringing SITC: LA to market a smooth road. I was sitting in Antwerp when I was ready to go into production and things that would normally be relatively easy to navigate—like opening a business bank account or filing paperwork for the LLC—were quite challenging. Also, I built my business model on pre-COVID pricing of materials. I feel pretty strongly about printing and packing in Los Angeles for a product that’s made especially for the city. I’ll have to see how things go from here. If I’ve learned one thing, it’s that I have no idea what tomorrows will bring.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Right now, I’m giving myself some time to breathe and be open to what’s next. Back in LA for just over a year now, I’m still regrouping, rebuilding, and reflecting on my time in Europe, how COVID changed the world, and how to best support Sit in the City: LA. I believe in the transformative power of mindfulness and meditation. And I stay hopeful that the decks will find their way into the hands of people who will benefit from a bit of inner peace and local LA adventure.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
For me, it was really interesting to see how people coped/didn’t cope with the world being crippled to the point of shutting down. It was almost surreal. Days filled with being fed statistics of people dying and being hospitalized with no quick fixes or answers on what to do or how to stay safe. At one point, I decided I needed to limit my news intake to 30 minutes a day. It was all so overwhelming. I think the biggest lesson for me was the very real reminder that life is precious. And every day should be lived to the fullest because we really don’t know what will happen from day to day.
