Today we’d like to introduce you to Yolanda Jamison.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve been sewing since I was a small child, so it just seemed natural when I had kids to sew with them as well. I worked in corporate America, in a cubicle for over 15 years. It just did not feel right for me, and I felt I was missing out on so many parts of being a mom.
One day my daughter and her friends were having a play date but for sewing and I thought to myself, this could be a business.
Fortunately, with the support of my husband, I was able to leave my corporate job and try my hand at creating and running my own business.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been without its challenges. The main thing is the decrease in income. I definitely work harder for less money, but I love what I do… Being a business owner means you make all of the decisions and having no experience at it, I’ve had to just figure a lot of stuff out on my own.
Also, as I mainly work from home, the work, life balance continues to be a challenge for me. I have to force myself to take breaks and not work on my business.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I get to share the art of sewing with kids and convince them that sewing is cool! Sew Contagious offers sewing classes, birthday parties, and Girl Scout workshops.
I love the joy kids find in creating and the pride they feel in their completed project.
I definitely feel a sense of pride myself when I see kids wearing something, even years later that they made with me!
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I definitely took a risk leaving a steady job with a steady paycheck. It’s been challenging, scary, exhilarating, all of the things, but I wouldn’t change it. I’m trying to build something that my family will be proud of.
