Today we’d like to introduce you to Livio Ramondelli.
Hi Livio, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
A pleasure to speak with you! I’m a freelanced artist currently living in Los Angeles. I’m most known for my longtime work illustrating Transformers for IDW Publishing and for creating the original science fiction series The Kill Lock.
I’ve also had my work featured in DC Comics, Heavy Metal Magazine, and Legendary Comics. I received a Masters from the Academy of Art in San Francisco.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Freelancing has been surprisingly smooth for me. My advice to anyone is that if you’re looking to freelance, take it as seriously as you can. Meeting deadlines and being good at communication are crucial.
For younger artists out there, I’d say that it’s a very good time in that thanks to social media your work can be seen by a wide audience very easily. The downside is that there is also much more competition and demand, so standing out can be harder.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
In addition to comic book work, I’ve also storyboarded and done concept art for some theme park attractions, like the Attack on Titan 4D rollercoaster in Japan.
I’ve also done design work for Google and Hasbro. In addition, the rise in popularity of comic book conventions around the world allows artists to visit countries across the globe, which has been a real unexpected benefit of this career.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
It’s a bit of a cliche, but there’s a reason it’s so repetitive. Doing what you love to do for a living really is one of the happiest things in life. Going to work rarely feels like a chore for me, and that’s a real luxury to get to say that. And also the traveling opportunities have been a pleasure as well.
