Meet Joel Ward of Joel Ward Magic in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joel Ward.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Joel. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I became interested in magic when I was just 6-years old; I was invited on stage by a magician at a school assembly. Since then, I have taken my magic very seriously. At 10, I was performing at children’s’ birthday parties and by the age of 15, I became a World Champion Teen Magician, placing 1st at the International Brotherhood of Magicians’ annual competition, the world’s largest magic organization. That same year, I was picked from hundreds of magicians to appear on television with master magician Lance Burton, in his “Lance Burton-Young Magicians Showcase.”

I currently perform hundreds of shows a year. I have been featured at the Montbleu Casino & Resort in South Lake Tahoe, on NBC’s “The Bonnie Hunt Show,” on My Network TV’s “Masters of Illusion,” with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus show, “Boom A Ring,” on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, on Comedy Central’s Tosh.0, on Penn and Teller’s “Fool Us,” for the CW Network, and as part of the cast of “Band of Magicians” at the Tropicana Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

I currently live in Los Angeles, California and performs for national television broadcasts, corporate clients, casinos, cruise ships, celebrities, and others.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I moved to Los Angeles from San Diego about 10 years ago. It wasn’t the easiest of transitions. The economy was in the gutter and my corporate clients sort of disappeared. I had to hustle hard in the beginning to make it here in LA. I was driving back and forth to San Diego almost 3 times a week to perform since my clients were all based there. I would do street shows in Venice and Santa Monica and I even worked at Miceli’s restaurant in Universal City on the weekends doing close up magic tableside for tips. I quickly learned that persistence was key to making a career here in LA and have kept that work drive ever since.

Joel Ward Magic – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My high energy, original magic astonishes people throughout the world. Making things appear and disappear, I present award-winning magic by giving classical magic a contemporary touch. My mind-boggling talents include engaging audience participation, comedy, comical close-up magic, and flashy Las Vegas-style illusions.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
One of my favorite moments was when I was performing at the Flamingo Casino & Resort in Las Vegas. I was filling in for a magician friend there and I got to fly my dad into see the show. I remember calling him out in the audience. He felt so proud of me at that moment and knew how hard I had worked to make it. I felt honored that he was there to see me perform in Las Vegas, a dream come true for him!
