Meet Melissa Montoya of Mel’s Skinspa Ink

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Montoya.

The founder of Mel’s Skinspa Ink, Melissa Lynn, began her passion for both Western and Holistic Medicine at a very young age, primarily because of the influence of her grandparents, Helena and John McFarlan. They founded, owned and operated both Nena’s Botica, an herbalist, aromatherapy, and spiritual store in combination with a Pharmacy that included prescription medicine, medical supplies, a convenience store, Western Union, Orlandi Valuta, and Mel’s favorite department, a makeup and skin section.

The years passed and Mel continued to grow up simultaneously working at the family owned Pharmacy, while having a well-rounded Christian upbringing consisting of private tutors, various extracurricular activities, and logging community service volunteer hours. Then at the age of 15 she also began working at the local mall inside the beauty supply store, “Town One Beauty.”

Because, she’s been home schooled and working from a young age, she suddenly felt the need to seek out other like-minded individuals. When she turned 14 she self-enrolled at the local community college wanting to meet more people, although she made unique lifelong friends, it wasn’t enough she wanted to also meet people her own age. So, that fall, she once again registered herself but this time at the local High School, she graduated at the age of 16, the youngest person to graduate from Rancho Verde High School.

Currently she has put her long-term goals of becoming a dermatologist on hold, in order to expand her Aesthetic studio. Meanwhile, she has only a few college transfer classes to complete then she is applying to a Bachelors of Nursing Registered Nurse B.S.R.N. (More degrees equals more services that can be offered).

Mel’s passion is to continuously learn and practice her skills: Art, Micropigmentation, Aromatherapy, Reiki, Science, Math, Skin (Dermatology) and the treatments that, prevent aging and disorders of the face and body.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It wasn’t always a smooth ride, everyone at every social and economic level has both obstacles and challenges to overcome, for Melissa, it was Meningitis. By 23 she had been admitted to the hospital along with 5 other people all exhibiting symptoms of according to: © Meningitis Now, a registered charity in England and Wales number 803016 and Scotland number SC037790 Registered Office: Fern House, Bath Road, Stroud, Gloucestershire GL5 3TJ.

Symptoms include: pain in the back, muscles, neck, whole body: fever, chills, lethargy, loss of appetite, malaise, or shivering. Gastrointestinal: nausea or vomiting. Skin: blotchy rashes or red rashes. Also, common: irritability, light sensitivity, headache, stiff neck, mental confusion, bulging fontanelle, fast breathing, fast heart rate, fear of loud sounds, headache, sleepiness, sluggishness, or stiff back.

“Meningitis is a disease that can strike quickly, but its impact can change your life forever.”

Unfortunately, the other Meningitis patients admitted at that time did not recover, she was the only one who made a full recovery. After which she had a new outlook on life, “to appreciate the beauty in everything each and every day, and to be thank full for being alive, while not being in pain.”

What were you like growing up?
As an only child till I was 10, I was a busy body, my parents had me enrolled in like every community class and extracurricular activity.

For example: Ballet, tap, swimming, modern dance, reading and writing music, playing the Harp, Etiquette classes, painting, weekly tours of art and science museums, etc.

After my two younger, gorgeous, intelligent sisters were born, things eased up because my parents were busy, so I was passed on to my grandparents, because I was old enough to help them at the family business.

Overall, great childhood in Los Angeles, I was born in Arcadia, then my parents moved to the Inland Empire and I went back and forth from my parent’s extra-large home to my grandparents’ home on the hill in Hacienda Heights.
