Meet Andrew Schundler of Paintbrush Weddings in Echo Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Schundler.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Andrew. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Paintbrush began when myself and my two partners, Jeff Prosser and Micah Malinics, were going through film school. There was a trend in the wedding film industry to create very stylized and directed wedding videos. All of us agreed that this was not the point of a wedding video. A wedding video should be an authentic representation of the day and the real moments, not the moments two videographers stage in a field with lights. So we decided to create Paintbrush Weddings to tell the stories of couples in a cinematic way, but with a focus on the real moments of the day and the people. Three years later, we have gotten the privilege of shooting over thirty weddings and still love it. We only take 10-15 a year because we are all pursuing work in Hollywood in different ways, but have stay committed to do Paintbrush.

Has it been a smooth road?
One of the bigger challenges we have faced is trying to make each wedding video we create unique. We do not want to make this a cookie-cutter formula or a template we follow. We will rent different lenses and try new things for each wedding to create looks that are very much the couple and we shoot way beyond what we need to create the video. What that leads to though is editing taking much longer than most other companies, and the biggest struggle is getting the video to a place we are happy with. We are all perfectionist and we don’t want to hand a video over thinking it was just another video. We want to love what we create and really see the couple through it.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Paintbrush Weddings – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Paintbrush Weddings is a wedding video business which specializes in authentic wedding videos. We are a three-person team that is based in downtown Los Angeles but shoot internationally. I am most proud of our dedication to making each video unique and for putting a priority on the guests of the day. Some video companies will shoot almost strictly the couple and then the venue and details. We set ourselves apart by making the guests a huge part of the piece. We know how long people slave over the guest list, and the people who do choose to come love the couple and want to support them on the biggest day of their lives. With that, we want them to be in the video! Especially since the day goes so fast, we have had couples tell us after that they saw someone in the video that they did not get to say hi to at the wedding and called them after watching the video. We love that.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I like best about LA is that it is a city of dreamers. People of so many different backgrounds and socio-economic backgrounds live and walk the same streets, each pursuing something big. LA never sleeps, nor does it feel like people are working, because any time of day there are people about and traffic on the 101.

But to me, that shows how LA is a city of freelancers and fighters to create the next big thing. What I like least about the city, though it isn’t the cities fault, is the isolation of communities.

Although everyone is a dreamer, everyone is in their own bubble. Growing up in a rural town, I miss the close feeling you have towards the people you see on the street.
