Check Out Lawrence Deacon’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lawrence Deacon.

Hi Lawrence, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Let me introduce myself, I am Lawrence L. Deacon, professionally known as Delawness. Born May 13, 1995, in St. Thomas. Jamaica. I am a Graphic Designer, Illustrator, Producer, and Songwriter that specializes in branding. At age seven, I moved to Montego Bay, where I grew up that’s also the same year I discovered my talent, been drawing ever since. I then got accepted to the Edna Manley College of the visual and Performing arts major in visual communication. It was like I expected, so I decided to drop out of college to pursue my dreams of being an internationally known graphic designer. After dropping out of college, my parents were disappointed. However, I had a plan and a dream.

I invested in social media marketing promoting myself, posting designs daily, etc. I would spend long hours drawing and designing since I know to be great at anything I would have to be dedicated and consistent. My work as a graphic designer have landed me the opportunity to work with musicians, fashion brands, media personality, educational institutions, government agencies and in other industries such as health, lifestyle and tourism.

I have worked with the likes of Caribbean Maritime University, Factories Corporation Jamaica, Chronixx, Coco Jones, Steady Punch, Koffee, Garnet Silk Jr, Dre Tosh, TiMe22, Trackdilla, Spade, Fabrice Gautier, Nova Lorraine, Claat, Levels and Yink just to name a few.

My first solo art exhibition, 2018 titled Waves at the Montego Bay Convention Center. It was also my brand launch of Delawness and the release of my first collection with the same-titled SS18 waves.

Since the pandemic hit everything changed, I had to do a brand revamp. That’s when I decided to merge all my knowledge, talents and ideas under one Delawness. I release my second collection Introspeq 2020 which consists of music, art and fashion. Where I write and produce music inspired by my art piece introspeq, accompanied with limited edition fashion pieces.

Followed by the release of my second collection London Emerald Inspired by my experience in London. 2021. This project captures my London experience in form of music, art and fashion.

I am in the progress of promoting my new project is slated for release CMPLCXTNS will be released on August 19, 2022 featuring Atlanta base singer Rudy Walker and Nigerian rapper Crossroadz. It’s the first single off my upcoming collection Waves & Pain with accompanied musical EP slated for release later this year.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road, Life has its challenges, ups and downs. Failure and success.

While promoting my 2o18 launch of my brand Delawness while on my way to my interview my aunt passed away that was really hard for me especially since I received the news on my way to an interview. I have had instances where I tried to hire a publicist in hopes of expanding my brand’s presence and received death threats and losing all my money in the process. Plunging into depression and developing anxiety. Being an artist isn’t easy. Had nights of thinking what’s next did I make the right choice. Days of little to no progress.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Graphic Designer, Illustrator, Producer, Songwriter that specializes in branding. I am known for my graphic design work. I am most proud of the quality of my work and when a client is extremely happy. The quality of my work, coupled with my work ethic.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I firmly believe print will come back stronger than before, I see more Ai-driven and e-commerce-driven businesses going forward. Abstract illustration is gonna be with us for a while and the demand is rising rapidly
