Conversations with Ruby Goldin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruby Goldin.

Hi Ruby, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Like so many others before me, I never imagined in a million years that I’d end up in the career that I have today. At a very young age, I set out to be an actor, and I spent the majority of my life in pursuit of that dream. It’s funny how you can get an idea in your head at such a young age and convince yourself that it’s what you want. Or allow the fear of failure or the worry of other people’s opinions to keep you on a path that you aren’t truly happy on. Luckily, in 2013 I started practicing yoga and that set me on a new path of self-discovery. Yoga gave me a space to process things I hadn’t allowed myself to process, to heal from emotional distress I had been running away from, and opened up my mind to the health and wellness space. Fast forward to 2017, I decided I wanted to become a yoga teacher so that I could help others in the way my teachers had helped me. At first, I thought this would just be a side gig, but then I got into Pilates and then strength training, and suddenly I realized that teaching movement and helping people connect to their bodies brought me so much more joy than acting ever had. In 2019, I officially stopped acting to pursue coaching full time. Since then, I have become certified in yoga, Pilates, strength training, corrective exercise, and nutrition. I am passionate about building better habits, educating people on the benefits of lifting heavy weights and proper nutrition, and helping women feel confident in their bodies.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The fitness industry can be tough, especially as a woman, but it has also helped me in so many ways. In my previous life (as I like to call it), I was desperate to be skinnier. Pursuing a career in acting, I was acutely aware that “the camera adds 10 pounds” and I never felt skinny enough and was very uncomfortable in my body. I was always trying some crazy diet fad or juice cleanse and hoping to look like the women I saw on tv or in magazines. But letting go of that career path and leaning into strength training, I discovered that being strong is much more fun, satisfying, and rewarding than being skinny. And that doesn’t mean that I am cured of all body image issues, but it has helped me a lot and it’s my mission to help other women lean into their strengths as well and let go of these old societal ideas of what a woman’s body should look like.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a strength & nutrition coach specializing in physique transformation. I am passionate about the power of blending Pilates training into weight lifting to help neuromuscular connection and injury prevention. I also love to help people take control of their nutrition and learn how to use it to their advantage to get the best results possible from strength training. I believe that exercise is not just about what it does for the body but how it impacts the chemicals and neural pathways in your brain as well. I believe that great things can happen when a body and mind are harmonious. Beyond all of this, what I believe sets me apart from other coaches or trainers is my obsession with mindset and the power of habits. True change happens when your mindset shifts. When I work with clients, I don’t just give them some workouts to do and a meal plan and send them on their way. I work with them on every level. How’s your sleep? How can we improve it? What are some habits you can develop to lower your stress levels? What’s your morning routine like? These seemingly minute details are what really make the difference in someone’s success and this is what I really love to dive into and layer on top of the fitness and nutrition components of transformation. I want to help people create a whole lifestyle transformation.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I feel like I am still just getting started myself! But I guess my biggest piece of advice would be to follow your intuition. Trust your gut. Let yourself try new things. See where it takes you. And don’t worry about what anyone else thinks. Just do you.
