Life & Work with Tatsumi Romano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tatsumi Romano.

Hi Tatsumi, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am originally from New York City and moved to LA right after I turned 19. It was a somewhat spontaneous decision; I had been working and living on my own in Georgia during the two years before that. However, I have always been drawn to exploring and seeing new places, so it felt like a natural progression for me. As for my professional path, I have been passionate about both acting and the mental health field for a long time. A few months after I moved to LA, I worked on a film called Ladyworld (an Official Selection of BFI London Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival’s Frontières Platform). Over the past year, I have shifted from film and television work to mainly doing commercials. Some of my shoots over the past few months were for Carl’s Jr., Arco/AMPM, Better Help, etc. Staying involved creatively through commercial work has been a fun way to balance acting with my graduate school schedule with my day job as a counselor at a treatment center. Ultimately, I’d love to continue finding ways to incorporate both creative expression and clinical work into my life.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think one of my biggest challenges was being on my own at a young age while pursuing my professional goals in a new place. However, in many ways, I now see this “challenge” as a positive because I learned to navigate new environments that I might not have encountered otherwise. Building up a tolerance for the unknown has been something that has been particularly helpful. Having a creative outlet and appreciating the simple things in my day-to-day routine has also been a big source of joy and meaning.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an actress and advocate based in LA. A few months after moving to LA, I worked on a film called Ladyworld (an Official Selection of BFI London Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival’s Frontières Platform). Over the past year, I have shifted from film and television work to mainly doing commercials. Some of my shoots over the past few months were for Carl’s Jr., Arco/AMPM, Better Help, etc. I have also been passionate about domestic violence awareness and the mental health field for a long time. I am currently in graduate school studying Clinical Psychology and work as a counselor at a treatment center. For several years before this, I served as an advocate at an organization focused on domestic violence awareness and prevention. Ultimately, I’d love to continue finding ways to incorporate both creative expression and clinical work into my life.

How do you define success?
Success is doing what makes you happy while contributing to the lives of others.
