Today we’d like to introduce you to Veronica Powers.
Hi Veronica, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve lived in Los Angeles my whole life. My first and forever love is performing. Whether that is behind a microphone, on the stage, or in front of a camera. I started acting professionally when I was seven years old and I am part of the Screen Actors Guild. I am so passionate about the arts and love all different types of content from Comedy Sketches to VoiceOver to Film to Commercials to Music.
I have been blessed to share the stage and screen with renowned performers, including Debby Boone, Peri Gilpin, Jane Leeves, Mel Gibson, Greer Grammer, and many new upcoming artists. I have collaborated in the recording studio with composers and producers, including heavy hitters such as Trey Bruce (Carrie Underwood), Francci Richard (Keyshia Cole, Patti LaBelle, Jo Jo, Fergie), Harvey Mason Jr. (Iggy Azalea, Ciara, Jordin Sparks, Fifth Harmony) and renowned vocal performance coach and talent scout CeCe Sammy (UK’s Pop Idol, Eurovision, Leona Lewis, The Voice UK, America’s Got Talent). I also enjoy working with international young artists such as Luena Martinez (The X Factor) and Asher Knight (Touring with The Vamps). There is nothing better than collaboration. As Francci always told me, “Team Work Makes the Dream Work”!
I am very passionate about giving back and love using the arts to do so. I have performed at numerous events for charitable organizations including LA Special Olympics World Games, National Breast Cancer Coalition, Mending Kids International, Upward Bound, US Coast Guard, LA Mission, Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, American Children’s Holiday Parade, and REAF Aids Foundation. I also have teamed up with the international spokesperson, Lucy Meyer, and used my original songs for her campaign with UNICEF x Special Olympics!
The most recent project I worked on was for Netflix and Horseless Cowboy x Igloo Music on “Misfit: The Series”. I dubbed the lead character Julia into English! The Netflix Original Series focuses on Julia who is trying to put together a high school musical without getting caught by the strict principal! I had so much fun working on this project and learned so much about dubbing from it. I loved being able to not only do voice-over and ADR but also sing on it! https://www.netflix.com/title/81275940
I cannot disclose the project yet, but I am currently dubbing a new project that I cannot wait to share!
Currently, I’m studying at the School of Dramatic Arts at the University of Southern California. Through USC, I am part of a Comedy ensemble that is in the style of SNL! We have live performances on February 18th, April 1st, and April 22nd. Follow me on Instagram for more details! @officialvpowers
My name may sound like a superhero, and I wish… actually scratch that I am a superhero. I believe in never giving up on your dreams no matter what people say. Growing up in the business has been hard but I am grateful for all the no’s and all the yes’s I’ve received. I am a strong believer that everything happens for a reason.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As I said before, it definitely has not been a smooth road. I faced rejection and backhanded comments to my face before I had even grown in my adult teeth! But I have trained myself to stay positive and practice gratitude each and every day.
I have written a few songs, and I try to showcase my optimism in them. I believe my positivity and simply my passion for the arts are what keep me going!
It is hard to balance school with work, but I am grateful I never stopped learning. As a performer, it is crucial to learn by observing people, reading, really listening to what people say, researching, and studying subjects you’re not interested in because a character you may play one day WILL be interested in that subject!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am most proud of the times I have performed for charities. Not only was I doing what I loved, but I also saw how impactful my art was to others. Especially children.
I specialize in dubbing, improv, sketch comedy, and film.
I’m known for being on Conan, in a Frosted Flakes Commerical, and being in Emma’s Chance directed by Anna Elizabeth James, as well as Netflix’s, Misfit: The Series.
I am not afraid to be myself and I have learned to love myself.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Good luck and bad luck constantly play in my life and business. I try to believe that everything happens for a reason though.
I believe in guardian angels and that my grandma (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0480377/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0), who was also an actress and singer who I unfortunately never got to meet, is mine.
I have lost many roles that I would have died to play. Now, thinking about it, it really hurts. It is also really hard as an actor seeing billboards and advertisements for projects you auditioned for but didn’t make the cut. But I try to remind myself that it is out of my hands.
It is especially hard in today’s day because you film a self-tape and you feel like it just goes into the digital cloud, and if they do see it… all you think about is what does the casting director think?! etc. It is very easy to be self-critical and thinking about it too much can eat at you. I try to give every audition my best shot and be grateful for the practice and try to move on if I don’t hear back. Just being grateful for the opportunity is crucial.
