Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Kim.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I first got into the entertainment Industry through Dance. I grew up dancing in High School when “Krumping” first came in, in 2007, I was obsessed with it my friends and I at lunchtime would dance battle each other. I was asked by a friend’s little brother to enter a Talent competition for his Church and ended up winning.
In 2014 I did an internship at Disney World in Orlando and entered a Talent competition called night of Stars where over 20 acts competed, I ended up winning best overall which sparked a fire and desire in me as well as gave me the confidence to pursue a career in becoming a professional Hip Hop Dancer.
At the time I was living in Auckland, New Zealand so after the internship at Disney World had finished. I moved back to Auckland, New Zealand, and decided to take dance classes, only to find that I could not pick up a single 8 count of choreography that was not my own. I had to learn to be able to pick up choreography fast so I decided to move to Sydney, Australia because I knew that I would be able to take more classes frequently as Sydney is a bigger city and has a bigger market and population than Auckland.
I would work a full-time job and straight after work I would go and take 2-3 classes right after work in order to be able to wrap my mind around picking up choreography whichever class that was on, I would take, I even did twerk classes, just so I could get my mind around picking up choreography faster. I was taking class at a studio called Dance Kool, from a dancer teacher/choreographer named Jet Valencia, and after attending his classes on a regular basis he asked me to do Hip Hop International World Championship with him and his dance crew Kookies N Kream, which I agreed to. Jet welcomed me into Kookies N Kream and took me to Arizona to compete at World Championships which was my first ever crew performance, it just so happen to be on the World Championship stage, safe to say I was nervous as hell.
Around the same time, I was scouted on Instagram by Justin Bieber’s choreographer Nick Demoura and he gave me a scholarship at Millenium Dance Complex in Los Angeles one of the world’s most well-known dance studios, where I was able to take as many classes as I wanted. I also auditioned while I was still in Australia to be a part of a community that is bonded by dance called Rich Fam. The founder Rob Rich took me on board and when I was in Los Angeles after having competed at HHI World Championships and having done the scholarship at Millenium Dance Complex I went straight into the Rich Fam intensive where we trained and prepared to do 5 shows in Los Angeles.
After I returned back to Sydney, Australia, Television network channel 7 got in contact with me about doing a television show called ‘Dance Boss’ which was a dance reality TV show. My team ‘The Marketing Guys’ end up getting to the finals and after that show aired my whole life flipped the momentum of coming off a national tv show propelled me.
I got signed as a model t in Sydney, Australia then to an acting agent and started to be put forward for television commercials and movies. My first ever movie audition I booked and was put into the Peter Rabbit 2: The Run-Away movie. In terms of the modeling side over the years of being a signed model I ended up booking multiple commercials, modeling for national and international campaigns and it became normal to see my face on advertisements on television, buses, billboards, and online.
My acting agent put me forward for Shang Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings by which I booked and ended up filming for 3 months doing fight Choreography and I also filmed another Marvel film which is yet to be released. I have recently relocated to Los Angeles on September 15th I am now upskilling and taking dance classes and acting classes to up-skilling to take on the new opportunities coming my way in this city.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a test of character, there has been times where it felt easy and times where it has been hard however all these struggles help to shape me to be the person that I am supposed to be and sometimes it can be hard to keep the faith as when you will get your next booking will but the uncertainty it is all a part of the excitement.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
What got me into the entertainment industry would be Hip Hop dancing. What I specialize in is freestyle dancing. What I am now known for would most likely be my commercial modeling as it is what put my face out into the world the most. I feel that what sets me apart from others is my drive and my commitment to see through my dream, hunger and the will to see and live out all my goals to the fullest end that I can imagine. Once I reach a goal, I always make it a point to dream even bigger.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was a very hyperactive kid always wanted to entertain and make people laugh. My personality was very outgoing and interests would be more active things I liked to ride my bike and play outside in the forest we had in our backyard in New Zealand. I was a very active child.
