Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Floyd.
Alex, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a mountain girl, born in Denver, Colorado. I’ve been dancing in some capacity for my whole life. I studied at Terpsichore studio in Bailey, Colorado and did seven years of summer intensives with Cleo Parker Robinson Dance in Denver. I attended University of Wyoming where I completed a Dance BFA and a minor in International Studies. In college, I injured my back, a diagnosis of spondylolisthesis which left me devastated and frustrated about my future career possibilities. This led me to lean into my desire to choreograph. I started creating work my last two years of University, put on a full-length show in Laramie right out of college, and promptly moved to Los Angeles to start a company. Soon my company became coined as “horror dance” as I work in deep topics that involve psychology. Along with creating full-length horror dance experiences, I have been traveling the world as my equal passionate hobby. I have created nine full-length evenings of dance in my professional career. I have also traveled to 45 countries since I was 16. My current endeavors include becoming a travel designer and helping people plan their perfect trip, as well as finding a way to continue my immersive horror dance explorations.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Of course, some times are smoother than others but when I am working within the realm of what I enjoy, everything seems smooth. The most difficult part has been learning how to be scrappy when it comes to cutting costs and learning how to do all of the parts of production that go along with choreography but aren’t choreography. I have learned how to run my own lights and sound and rent small spaces. I have created my own costumes and props, sets and design. Since I am mostly self-funded, it creates challenges around how large of a production I can manage. The difficulties have helped me create new avenues and led me to immersive works.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I would love to tell you about my new endeavor as a travel designer. This idea came to me in a moment that made so much sense in my body and mind. I want to help people design their travels, vacations, and trips abroad. Much like a travel agent, but one that isn’t in the pocket of any other companies. I want to focus on budget travel and giving people a catered experience that will meet their needs and desires. For example, some like to travel with a loose plan vs a tight plan. Some people want history and culture while others want to travel for food and alcohol experiences. I have a method that will allow me to get to know my travelers and help them research and plan the perfect trip.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I love any recommendations and information about other countries. I take a lot of trips and love making friends everywhere I go. I would love to help you plan a trip to anywhere in the world. I have been to every continent on earth and making my way to every country. I know the ins and outs of travel, especially on a budget.
