Inspiring Conversations with Brooke Campanelli of Soul Play Yoga & Fitness Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Campanelli.

Hi Brooke, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Ten years ago, I walked into the yoga studio I own today and said, “I’ve never taken a yoga class before in my life, but I think I’m supposed to be here.” I was 40 years old and the woman at the front desk kindly guided me to my very first class. I am not sure what drew me there but at the time, I had just left an abusive marriage and was a single Mom with a three years old sons. I was broken emotionally and still recovering from all I had been through. I hadn’t actually felt my feelings in years. I was numb inside.

Something just walked me in the door of the yoga studio in my neighborhood that day. In those very first classes, I started to feel my body again, I was able to breathe again and then the healing began. I felt my confidence come back, forgiveness arise for myself and others and I was able to find my voice again. Over the next few years, while running an Etsy shop I dove deeper into my yoga & Mindfulness meditation practice. My yoga practice was transforming me and reminding me of who I really was.

I eventually became a certified Mindfulness teacher for kids & adults and created Mindful Kids LA. We teach Mindfulness to kids in classrooms, afterschool programs and summer camps. I was called once again into an opportunity to become a yoga teacher, so I trained with Cheryl Moss & Nathania Stambouli and became a certified yoga instructor. Thereafter I trained extensively in Yin Yoga, Vipassana Meditation, Buddhism and Mindfulness.

I was given the opportunity to manage and teach at Soul Play Yoga Studio for many years where I felt I really had come home to myself.

I purchased Soul Play Yoga during the Pandemic. Some say it was a gutsy move, but I knew in my heart it was my path. To continue the healing for others that yoga and mindfulness has brought to me. We recently renovated and reopened the studio at the same location I first walked into ten years ago.

Today I own Soul Play Yoga & Fitness Studio with Thomas Taubman who is a senior teacher from Yogaworks. Together we have an Indoor Studio & Outdoor Studio in Culver City with over 35 in-person classes per week, along with a robust livestream and on-demand platform.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Certainly owning and running any small business during the Pandemic has been a challenge. But we have adapted, become creative and found trust & resiliency which we teach quite a bit in our classes.

We’ve been impressed with Soul Play Yoga & Fitness Studio, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Soul Play Yoga & Fitness Studio is committed to building community and having an inclusive, playful and diverse studio. We are most proud of our variety of teachers and offerings. We have everything from the unique trademarked class Yo-Box, to Power Hour Vinyasa and Restorative & Reiki… and everything in between. It is very important to us to have beginning level classes so those just starting have stepping stones. Our diverse group of members also includes some of our most important yogis…our seniors! We have a very unique class called Better With Age that is only offered at our studio in Los Angeles. What sets us apart is our commitment to teaching philosophy in our classes as well as a vast variety of classes on our schedule. We also offer one of the only outdoor private yoga studios in Los Angeles. Our Studio has a Boho vibe with a hot tea bar and an updated, airy and bright feel.
