Today we’d like to introduce you to Cait Khosla.
Hi Cait, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m 28 years old and a resident of Santa Monica, CA! I’m an expert in horticulture and digital marketing. I created Botany Box so everyone can easily have & care for their own collection of plants delivered to their doorstep, repotted and ready to give your indoor space that pop of energy. When I lived in NYC back in 2017, the idea for Botany Box really took off. I realized I couldn’t build my own green oasis in my apartment without it costing me an arm and a leg. It was so frustrating going plant shopping and coming home with a $14 succulent, so I decided to get serious about creating a solution to a problem. My mom actually named the company Botany Box, which was so sentimental because she grew my love for plants at a really young age. You can find us featured in articles from brands like Real Simple, Well+Good and Elite Daily.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Anyone who says they’ve had a smooth road is lying (seriously). There are always struggles along the way – funding, working full-time, support/understanding from immediate naysayers, the list goes on. Another struggle I found was being a female taken seriously, whether in business meetings, pitches or any type of brand promotion to other companies.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Before starting Botany Box, I began my career in strategic digital marketing at various venture backed startups in NYC. I’m most proud of my ability to track/trend social media across the board, expand the meaning of organic growth and conduct successful campaigns for the companies I’ve worked at. This has all successfully spilled over into Botany Box and helped the trajectory of our brand on social now.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I’ve personally networked within the plant community itself, completely outside of business. The connection people have to plants is virtually unmatched, and one would say a “cult following”. I knew if I could get people to like my plants, I could get them coming back (and referring us to their friends!)
It’s helpful to note that everything does NOT have to execute perfectly. You don’t have to have everything done right the first time. I wish I told myself sooner that everything didn’t need to be done right now, in the moment, or else it wasn’t going to be a success.
