Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Martyn.
Hi Melanie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Rockville, Maryland. I started dancing at the age of 3 and continued to perform with my community ballet company until I graduated. In high school, my interest in acting was piqued in English class, of all places. We had to put on little performances of whatever Shakespeare play we were reading at the time and that opened the door for me. I dreaded speaking in public, but it turned out, having other words to say that weren’t mine somehow made it easier to speak. By the time I went off to Boston College, I decided that I wanted pursue acting and officially declared myself a theater major by the end of my first semester. During those years, I not only performed and choreographed with the very prestigious Dance Ensemble but studied abroad at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in my junior year. After graduating with honors, I went back to London to be closer to my beau until we moved to New York City a year later. It was there that I was able to continue training with amazing teachers and got my start in background acting. Within a year, I was in my first feature film. After four years in NYC, my husband and I decided that we wanted to try another city and we moved to Seattle and then down to Los Angeles to continue to pursue a career in film.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Haha, I think anyone who says they had a smooth road in show biz is probably not telling you the whole story. The biggest learning curve for me was actually the business part of it all. When you decide to become an artist, you throw yourself into your craft. All the classes and training tell you how to become a better actor, but not a lot focuses on HOW to get the job. It took me years to learn the business side of this industry; I’m still learning! There’s also a lot of misinformation out there and it takes time to weed out the gems from the rubble.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an actress, dancer, producer, and VO artist. I am known for projects like ‘Us+’, a tv series where I received a best actress nomination, ‘Maysville’, where I was written in by the director, as myself, essentially, and ‘That Night’, a drama short I executive produced and acted in that will make it’s premier in September at the Oscar qualifying Holly Shorts Film Festival. ‘That Night’ follows the story of a combat veteran struggling with the guilt he carries from war who decides to end it all when, one night, he meets a mysterious woman. Having known multiple people very close to me struggle with depression and attempted suicide, this story hits home for me in many ways. Our director, Samuel Gonzalez Jr., is a vet himself and the rawness he captures is nothing less than powerful. It is an understatement to say I am highly anticipating the release of this truly moving story and our goal is that it will bring hope to those who may be struggling themselves.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I persevere. I don’t let anything stand in my way. I work on myself constantly and am always striving for happiness. Most of all, I believe in myself and get really excited for what the future holds.
