Meet Phil Rubin of PR Fitness in Orange County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phil Rubin.

Phil, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been in the gym weight training since 1984. Over those 30+ years I’ve made lots of mistakes and wasted my time on movements and programs that had little or no effect and over time developed proven programs that do work. This is some of the background knowledge I use to create effective and efficient programs so you can see results. The advantage you have is you don’t have to go through that process of trial and error… I already did.

Since every person is different, you will receive personal attention to your training. People vary in their age, build and previous experience and this requires their training to take these variances into account. Although I use a general template when developing training programs, the training sessions will be different in one way or another for each person.

I have competed in powerlifting. In powerlifting form is extremely important., Having poor form results either in a failed lift or injury. When I work with clients I stress proper form to aid in progress and avoid injury.

I am certified by NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association, www.nsca.com)

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was a slow start. People don’t come running to your door as soon as you hang out your shingle, np matter how good you may be. I was not a stranger to being an independent contractor so I knew that it would take time to get my name and services out there. It took about a year to become established in the community.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about PR Fitness – what should we know?
I am a personal trainer with over 30 years’ experience lifting. Although my background is powerlifting, I work with people with all different requirements and restrictions, whether it be age, metabolic issues (such as diabetes), or injuries. The years of experience places me far ahead of 99% of the trainers. I have already made the mistakes that cause injury years ago. I have seen the fads and the celebrity spokespeople come and go… but what really works is doing the basics… that the focus. That’s what works.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
A trainer obviously needs to be personable. A really good trainer has the know-how and experience to be creative and intuitive. Just standing there and telling (or yelling) at people to do things is not training. A good trainer needs to be sensitive to the client’s needs and be cognizant of every movement the client makes. Is the client balanced? Is there unusual straining that may cause injury? How is the form? There are these and many more questions a good trainer has to ask every time a client performs a movement.
