Conversations with Kreena Desai

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kreena Desai.

Hi Kreena, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am the creator of a Home Decor and Accessories brand – Kree. My journey into macrame started in design school (both at NIFT in Mumbai and FIT in New York) where my love for this craft evolved over the years and my assignments turned into retail products. My Indian roots, along with my ‘Made in Canada’ environment have allowed me to develop products that are hand-made, sustainable, and have strong attention to detail. Therefore, Kree positions itself as a handmade decor and accessories brand which is known for its light and airy colour palette, sustainable packaging, minimal branding, and impeccable quality.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have been fortunate to have a great support system and my journey so far has gone smoothly. Of course, every small business has its challenges and I can’t stress this enough – it is important to carve out a niche and stay consistent with your branding and social media presence to stand out. This has helped me grow my Instagram family to over 10K followers as well as make over 500 sales in less than six months.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in making macrame decor and accessories. My brand ‘Kree’ is known for selling light and airy macrame keychains, coasters, car charms, and a lot of other home decor and accessories with the aim to bring peace and tranquillity to my customers’ surroundings. Lots of love and good vibes go into every piece I make in the hopes of helping my clients create a beautiful home or special day that truly reflects their personal style – be it boho, modern, or somewhere in between. This is a one-woman army, so I am extremely proud of growing this brand single-handedly, which is not easy but it makes this process just as much satisfying.

Apart from being a small business owner, my passion truly lies in making my brand as sustainable as possible. Sustainability is a huge factor in our industry especially if you do it right. Kree is striving to be as sustainable and eco-friendly as possible by using 100% recycled cotton yarn to make our products and our packaging is reusable, recycled and compostable. Kree also strives on making our products with the highest quality standards. Customers understand that when they purchase a macrame product, someone has put in their time and energy into delivering a product that is uniquely theirs. Kree’s products also have the advantage of lasting for a long time which speaks to the allure of having an eco-friendly product that is not easily disposable.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
The trepidation of starting my own business for the past 4-5 years led to anxiety and a sense of wasted time. But, after having the courage to jump off the cliff (metaphorically) I have found that being able to control my destiny is what makes me happy.
