Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Linares.
Alex, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in San Salvador, El Salvador. I was always a trouble maker growing up. I didn’t like school and many times I skipped school all together. At the age of 12 I started hanging out with the wrong crowd. Most of the kids I associated with were gang members, delinquents etc. After being hit by a car trying to escape other guys who wanted to hurt me and 6 months later being shot and spending a week in the hospital after altercation, my father called me and said I was going to come to US with him whether I wanted to or not. It took us almost a month to get to Los Angeles. We crossed rivers, fields, desert, walk etc. but we finally made it. I spend almost 2 months in my room doing nothing and hoping to go back home till I started going to school and it all changed. I wanted to learn English so bad! I remember watching nothing but English TV shows, listened to music and English. I made it my mission in life! After six months, I was translating for all the other kids in my classroom that couldn’t communicate with the teachers. I became a 4.0 GPA student. When I was a senior in high school I started working at a camera store in Brentwood, CA. I remember falling in love with photography. After I graduated I started working full time at the camera store. I was more interested in learning photography and making money than to go to College. After working there for 2 years I moved to another Camera store, bigger and with more professional equipment. I started shooting photography on the weekends to make extra cash and because I loved doing it. I left the camera store and started working at a car dealership. I was promoted several times within a year because I was good at it and stayed there for a few years. I felt like something was missing. I was not doing photography which is what I really wanted to do. I took a chance in 2009 after talking to my wife about how I felt and that I wanted to pursue photography as a carrier. She supported me with the decision and I purchased a digital camera that day. That was the beginning of my carrier as a photographer. 3 years ago, I was hired by a Hispanic News channel to produce content for them. Now I am a photographer, teacher, producer and director. (Jack of all trades)
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have had many up and downs through my career. One of the most challenging one is to be coming from a corporate environment to a freelancer. The learning on the job through mistakes.
