Today we’d like to introduce you to Black Thumb Farm.
Hi Black Thumb Farm, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Everyone deserves access to healthy, fresh foods. That is the foundation of Black Thumb Farm. We teach and train young people the art and skill of farming and growing their own food. More than that, we also offer workshops and classes that teach valuable life skills like budgeting, resume building, access to higher education, and more. We hope to send our youth into the world feeling confident, secure, and ready for whatever is to come, and we believe it all starts in the soil. We work primarily with the BIPOC youth community, providing access to resources and promoting equity.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We have amazing support from our family, friends, and community. Instagram has been a blessing! Upfront costs for a nonprofit can be steep, and we had many, many people contribute and help us raise necessary funds. Finding land to farm in such a developed city is extremely difficult, so we have been working with city council to help us access larger parcels of land.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I- Alexys – am the Executive Director and lead instructor at Black Thumb Farm. We have an amazing team that always gives 100%. Youth come to our space to learn to farm and garden in ways that benefit people as well as the natural environment. We teach the histories of traditional farming practices and work the land to continue these closed circle processes. We are most proud when our youth are able to use the skills and knowledge and bring it to their own community, whether that be their families, schools, friends, and more.
How do you think about happiness?
Being with our youth, families, and communities in nature is the very best.
