Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristina Valdez.
Hi Kristina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hi, my name is Kristina and I’m gonna give you a little bit of insight about me and my life here in Los Angeles.
Well, from a young age I was very independent. Always wanted to do things on my own and for myself. My family did not come from money and my parents had me very young, so I was no stranger to struggle growing up. My mother always made it a point to let me know how important it was to be successful, finish school and do my best. As a kid, I observed everything and tried to educate myself as much as I could on the things that interested me. Business and money was always one of them. I got my first job at 15, I remember getting my first check and wanting to instantly work more. I worked every summer until I graduated high school. I began my entrepreneurial journey in 2013 at 18 as a freelance makeup artist, did just makeup for about four years. In 2016, I decided to open up my own cosmetic business, I sold my products online as well as in salon stores. I did that for two and a half years before I sold my company on Shopify.
The experience was so rewarding, but I knew I wanted to explore the beauty industry more and put my skills to the test. After a good 6/7 years, I stopped doing makeup and ventured into lash extensions. I did some research and eventually went to school to become certified to be a lash technician. I’ve now been doing lash extensions for a little over two years and I absolutely love it. I’ve gotten to be apart of some of my client’s most rewarding moments, weddings, baby showers and other memorable moments. I am currently in the process of getting my LLC and expanding my business in Los Angeles which is such a big accomplishment for me. Being from LA and a part of this growing community and industry is something I’ve always wanted. Seeing it come to life is definitely a different feeling.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been smooth. Being an entrepreneur is a challenge. Especially when it comes to investing your own money into something. You never really know if it’s going to be 100% successful. When I first started my business, I had doubts on some days and was motivated on other days. What gets you through those difficult times is having confidence in yourself, knowing that aside from every trial and tribulation, you will make it successful one way or another and you will accomplish whatever goal you have set up for yourself. Having that mentality is important when starting any business, as well as keeping an open mind and doing as much research as possible.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a professional lash technician and business owner. I enhance the natural state of your lashes by applying lash extensions to your natural lashes. Doing lash extensions takes precision, patience and concentration. Although there are so many different techniques to applying lash extensions, it’s important while doing your client’s lashes you’re also taking care of the natural lash as well. As a professional, I pride myself in the way I handle my clients and I believe my work speaks for itself. I am always trying to find a better way to improve because there is always room for growth. I think what I’m most proud of is myself, perfecting my craft and sticking to my plan. This industry is very competitive and there are so many amazing lash artists/technicians in Los Angeles. So the fact that my business is still progressing and moving let’s me know I’m doing something right.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love most about LA is that it’s home. It’s one of the most welcoming cities. We have so many talented and amazing people living here and from every background, you could think of. We don’t discriminate and there are a wide range of different opportunities. Not to mention we have the best sports teams and the best fan base. LA is a vibe. What I dislike about LA is the stereotype it could sometimes give off to those who are not from here. You do not need to have the best shoes or have the most money to be accepted. Being yourself and staying true to who you are regardless of who you’re around will always stick with people longer.
