Today we’d like to introduce you to Charity Clark.
Charity, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My parents always encouraged my siblings and me to become our own bosses but we dismissed it thinking it would be too unstable. Although, I did find myself slanging candy, homemade dreamcatchers and other little projects in hope to make some extra cash. For myself personally, I wanted to go to college like my mom and get a very well paying job in a respectable field, the only problem was I had a hard time committing to one thing. I was constantly looking for ways to grow or innovate. I wanted to use my creativity to its fullest ability and after working a full-time hotel job while in college, I soon realized how much I valued being in charge or when I worked or not. I wanted to take days off without feeling guilty. I went to Cal State Fullerton and majored in communication- journalism. During that time, I started travel blogging and that was the first time as an adult where I discovered the possibility of making money online. While in school, I joined an educational co-ed entrepreneur fraternity named Sigma Upsilon Mu, although I felt like being a blogger was a passion project the fraternity helped me learn more about what running a business looks like and encouraged me to continue social media marketing. The group also gave me ideas of other small businesses I could start and run.
During my junior year of college, I had the opportunity to get hired by NBC Universal as a full-time summer intern. There I was a social media intern for the Marketing team at Universal Studios. It was my first and last internship. I loved every single thing about it and was grateful for all the knowledge and hands-on experience I received there. As much as I loved blogging and doing influencer work, I assumed my career would be in marketing and I was okay with that. Right after I graduated from college, my mom’s breast cancer moved to stage four, and she and my grandma needed my help around the house a lot more. During that time as I was applying for jobs, I tuned into a podcast and the host, who a year later would end up being my business coach, was talking about being an online coach. Intrigued, I dug down the rabbit hole and discovered more to running an online business that wasn’t just blogging. There were life coaches, manifestation coaches, social media managers, business coaches, virtual assistants and so much more. I decided as a way to be able to stay home with my mom and make money, I would start becoming a virtual social media manager, I then started to transform my Instagram as a resource to help others learn more about how to monetize their platforms as to how I did when I was blogging.
I also saw this as an opportunity to be picky with the job I would get since now I was making money here and there, I wasn’t in a rush. (This is all still summer/fall 2019 – the summer after I graduated in spring 2019 from CSUF) By March 2020, I was making some profit here and there but since my mom was getting better, I decided to take on a job for more stability as I grew my business. Then the pandemic hit and the job I was supposed to start for went on a hiring freeze. At first, I was worried and scared but then realized how many businesses needed to get on social media so I buckled down and got to work. By June 2020, I officially cut out my social media services and emerged fully into the coaching that I do to this day. I am a clarity coach who helps multi-passionate entrepreneurs get unstuck, gain clarity on who they truly are and their inner desires then help them scale their life and business in alignment. I started promoting my services more publicly in October 2019. Last year in January 2020 was when I officially registered my business as an LLC and now it’s been one year of being fully registered. I now have a fully operating business and started a social star scholarship to help black and other Woc get the resources they need to start their own online business. My goal is to be able to help with finances around the house so my mom can focus on her medical needs and also treat my family to their dream vacation.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, absolutely not. I wanted to quit plenty of times. Backstory: When I started my business, I didn’t have a job, so there was no extra money to rely on. When I graduated college I was 21. I didn’t know anything about running a business. I tried looking for a job but kept getting declined, up until my birthday in July. The day after I turned 22, I felt like a failure. I felt as if I had no drive. I didn’t have much extra money to my name at all. My business saved me, it gave me my passion back. It made me feel in control again. So whenever I wasn’t making money in my business, whenever I had sleepless nights or high anxiety around why people weren’t buying from me, what if I couldn’t pay my bills, I remembered my why. I remembered the freedom I craved, the ability to have control over the direction of the projects I was working on, how there weren’t a lot of black women in the online space and how I wanted to be that role model for other black girls that this too can be possible for them, the opportunity to not miss family events or be there for my mom. I would cry to my boyfriend (often) and he would always remind me that if it was easy, everyone would be doing it. Things like that really helped push me through.
We’ve been impressed with She Got Social LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am an online Clarity Coach. I help multi-passionate entrepreneurs get unstuck, gain clarity around their inner desires so they can understand themselves better and scale their business in their OWN aligned way. I tend to help a lot of online service providers (VA’s, SMM, OBMS, Digital Marketers) step into their power and become the powerful CEO’s they were destined to be since its common for a lot of service providers to feel like employees to their clients when they aren’t. I help other online coaches and niche’s as well but this has been the common theme of people who come to me so far. I chose this path because as a multi-passionate person, I was always told to just commit to one thing. I was bashed for wanting to try multiple things and family members, friends and advisors would always assume I bailed when I was tired of it. I held to this narrative for a long time until I realized it wasn’t that I was bored with that thing, I was just fascinated by something else and wanted to experience it. I valued trying new things, meeting new people, embracing myself in things that may seem different. (Hence why I LOVE traveling)
Being multi-facet is a beautiful thing and allows you to connect with many different people from different backgrounds, but it is important to also know how to focus when needed and ensure your creative downloads or motives are meant to act on in that moment or saved for later, so this is what I help others with. Brand / what makes me stand out/ what I am known for: I realized how many of us don’t truly know who we are, especially multi-passionate people. So many of us, especially entrepreneurs in the online space, might be chasing someone else’s dream and wonder why it is taking us so long to get there. So I am really passionate about helping others learn more about themselves and step into their star power so they can shine like the star they are. I have this THING with stars. When I was young, I told my mom I was going to be a STAR when I grew up, so she would take me to Hollywood, help me find a blank star, have me take a pic next to it and then write my name on it on her phone. Doing what I do now helps me be a Star the best way I know how, and now I get to help others be a star as well. Offers: 1:1 coaching, mastermind, intensives and masterclasses.
