Conversations with Roshaun Davis AKA The Spiritual Homie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roshaun Davis AKA The Spiritual Homie.

Hi Roshaun Davis, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been tuned in to my creative spirit since I was in elementary school. I can remember sitting in my mom’s living room mediating before I even knew what people called it. I would sit in the middle of the floor and envision the house before and after we lived there. I used to see the progression of life on that particular piece of land so clearly.

It was then that I started to tap into more and more mental and spiritual development. Through high school, I would read books on personal development. I would listen to songs that had messages in it, write down the messages heard, and then look them up on the internet to find out what they were referencing in the song. It was like falling down a rabbit hole through music. I really understood even back then that the revolution will not be televised. In college, I got into writing and performing music. I found my voice and became and emcee in a hip-hop group called Righteous movement. We toured all over California and even almost got signed to Warner Bros. It taught me how to tap into the energy of large groups of people and it taught me how powerful words can be. Through music, I learned the ropes of managing a band, writing press releases, designing merch, and marketing. This leads me to starting my own marketing and management company for artists called Unseen Heroes in 2008. Over the last 12 years, I’ve grown the company to a six-figure creative agency based in Sacramento but we work all over California doing event activations, large-scale campaigns, and retail experiences.

During the shutdown in May, my personal Facebook account got hacked and my personal FB and IG was deleted. Instead of starting a new personal IG, I decided to start @thespiritualhomie in May 2020. It was simply a page that I curated dope lines and words of wisdom that have helped my on my path through my life. My goal was to share it with like-minded people who needed to hear the messages like I hear them: through the homie. It’s been a little over seven months since I started the page, and the community has grown to almost 11K of people from all over the world. They send in quotes. We have conversations about tips and advice that have helped them on their journey and I share bits in pieces like: The Homie Just Said… Building up the Spiritual Homie community is one of those moments in life where all that you’ve done in your previous years finally clicks and you realize why you had to take that route. I am just getting started, but I get messages daily about how people vibe with the page and how it is really helping them get through this pandemic.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t believe in such thing as a “smooth” road. We all have our own challenges and hurdles that we have to overcome. That is what makes the good moments in life that much better. I definitely have had my share of downs. But, there is an old saying that goes: it’s not about how many times you get knocked down; it’s about how many times you get back up. That really resonates with me. Losing years of content and a lot of my digital identity wasn’t the best moment. I know a lot of people would have flipped out. But for me, I always look at situations and ask: Why is this happening for me? What am I supposed to learn from this? Where is the lesson here? It’s that kind of mindset that allows me to always look for the blessing or the silver lining in a situation. I’m the homie that will always tell you the glass is half full. Or better yet, it’s always full because even if it is half full, the other half is filled with space and opportunity for more.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a creative by nature. Always have been. Always will be. I am a champion for the Arts because it has helped me shape my mind and overall being into one that exists to constantly bring love and peace to anything I do. Looking accumulatively at my life, I have always been one of those people that exist to forge their own path. So, I specialize in being authentic to myself. And with that, I’ve been able to see success in a lot of different endeavors.

What were you like growing up?
I’ve always been the person that loves to talk. I get it honest from my grandfather who passed away last year. I remember he would talk to any and everyone anytime we went out. As a kid, I hated it. We would sit for what felt like hours while he had a conversation with a stranger. But now that I’m older, I realize that I am just like him. We connect with people from all walks of life. We are cool with everyone when their cool with us. Growing up, that was always one of the things that helped me move through a lot of spaces that others couldn’t. I was cool with the gangstas, I was cool with the nerds, I was cool with the teachers, I was cool with the janitors. Having that disposition is very helpful in business and being an entrepreneur.
