Today we’d like to introduce you to Corban Campbell.
Corban, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After close to fifteen action-packed years of working and living in Southern, CA my wife, little baby and I switched up the pace and headed a few hours north to the green pastures of Ventura to open a coffee shop. My background is marketing and photography, amongst many restaurant odd jobs and some small cafes. The six years prior to opening the shop, I spent on the road travel nonstop all over the world as a surf marketing manager. The love for coffee has always been there and the goal was to find all the good coffee spots along the way, so we were never far from quality coffee.
After years of travel and experiencing coffees from around the world and coffee rich areas, my wife and I decided to slow down some of the traveling and focus on making a community inspired coffee shop. We wanted it to feel good and focus on quality coffee, an enjoyable clean space, community, and polite staff. Most of the time, you get one or two of these elements, but we didn’t want to alienate anyone and wanted to welcome anyone enjoys coffee and friends. My wife’s background is in accounting and she’s really creative, so she’s the perfect partner to tackle something like this. The shop opened on Aug 12th of last year so it’s been just a little over a year. The shop has been doing really well thankfully.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Covid has thrown some curveballs, so like any small business we have been on our toes for a while. The cool thing is we sort of used the situation to our strengths. We build a nice little to go window that has an intercom. The great big window nook that people use to sit in, we built out a temporary art gallery. Giving the community something to look in at, instead of the dull covid paperwork. Jeff Canham is a San Francisco artist who showed his work first and Rachel Kaye will have a few pieces up for the month of November.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Singing Sun – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We wanted Singing Sun to feel good and focus on quality coffee, an enjoyable clean space, community, and polite staff. Most of the time, you get one or two of these elements, but we didn’t want to alienate anyone and want to welcome anyone that enjoys coffee and friends.
We are most proud of the community and getting to know them. We also want to continue pushing creativity and open-minded thinking not just in what we do but with others.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
At the moment, it’s been steering the boat through Covid… We do have ideas for maybe adding beer and wine and extending the hours. Additionally, we are working on launching a little online store where you can shop our specialty artist tees, hoodies, hats, amongst other merch.
