Meet K. Starr of Starr Ent in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to K. Starr.

K., please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Born in Columbia, South Carolina, I’ve known music since I was literally a baby. I took my first steps in the church and was known as the little child that would play his tambourine. My mom was ahead of the praise team and my dad was the minister of music, so I’ve sung on the choir since I was two years old. Music and entertaining run through my family, so it was evident that I was going to be an entertainer.

Transitioning into gymnastics and later into dance, I always enjoyed being active and performing. Doing many talent shows, pageants and various performances throughout high school and college, where I majored in Music-Voice and minored in Dance, I know there was nothing else that I wanted to do. I picked up acting along the way, which came natural to me in singing with my first agency back Millie Lewis Columbia.

I moved to Atlanta to continue the pursuit of entertaining, doing various performance shows, like having the honor to dance for Bobby Brown, CeCe Peniston, and Montel Jordan. Atlanta really taught this kid from South Carolina what it takes to be a star amongst people who do the same thing you do. Through many tests and trials in Atlanta, I ended up losing my apartment and car, having to move back home–but still always kept the dream alive. Ultimately I ended up in LA, where I knew I always wanted to be! Having the honor to sign with Kreativ Artists, I’m at the point of my life now of never giving up, always striving for the best, to be my best, and continue to shine in life and in entertainment. I thank God for where He’s brought me from and where I’m going to next.

Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all, but the older I get the more I understand that everything happens for a reason, and it’s very imperative to learn when you can while being in the storm or the wilderness. As I was saying before, losing my apartment damaged me for a long time because I didn’t understand what life was. In this journey of being a star, I’ve had to go back home twice. The first time, I was so lost and confused, and in such a dark place. The second time, I told myself that I would never be in that place again and to take what I could why I was home, be as creative as possible, and REST-my mind and body. Keeping my ear attentive to what God was doing and protecting my peace was the most important thing. I come from a line of family people (My dad, mom and grandmother), so giving up is never an option. I know what it’s like to lose battles-I’ve been dropped from an agency, I’ve been promised many opportunities and dreams that have fallen through, put my best foot forward and still get the door closed on me many time, etc. — However the war will be won, and whatever may come my way, I will never be defeated.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I think first and foremost, I am known for singing. Singing and music will always be first to me, no matter where life takes me. I was literally created to sing. I did a lot more dancing in Atlanta, which was great because it’s always such a freedom of expression, and dancers literally are the coolest people you’ll ever meet! I also love writing, acting, and modeling when the opportunity presents itself. For me, I never liked feeling like I was all over the place in being a jack of many trades but not a master of any, so I just try to use discernment and follow my heart in knowing what season I’m in at the time.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Dancing for Bobby Brown probably takes the cake! Just me being a R&B/Pop singer myself, you look up to people like Bobby Brown that came before you and paved the way! I remember that day, all of the dancers were stressed because hours before the show, we were still learning choreography and doing staging and never had a proper soundcheck with the timing of everything, and our schedule not aligning with The King’s. I remember that day a lot of things just not going right, including it beginning to rain when we were supposed to perform outside, but before we went on, one of the background singers held a prayer circle, and you could feel the peace surround the room. When we left holding, it stopped raining, and there was a rainbow in the sky. That’s when we knew that everything was going to be okay. To feel the electricity from the thousand people that came out, with the music, lights, and everything coming together was such an amazing moment.
