Meet Nicky Kaplan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicky Kaplan.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve had 24 years of experience in the field of Interior Architecture and Design. I studied Interior Design at Ryerson Polytechnic University In Toronto and moved to California to work for the world-renowned architecture firm, HOK in 2000. I worked there from 2000-2011 and then started my own firm in 2012.

Interior Design has always been a passion of mine starting from a very young age. I grew up in South Africa and my parents moved us around alot. Up until age 14, we moved about 8 times. As a child, my favorite weekend activity was to visit open houses. I would always pay close attention to the details and come home and spend hours thinking about ways in which I would decorate them.

The architecture and interiors in South Africa are truly an eclectic mix and even to this day when I return home to the US, I’m so inspired and energized by the design. There is a big emphasis on indoor/outdoor living and artists and artisans use resources that are readily available to them. With this comes a uniqueness and an ode to the land.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I feel pretty blessed. I’ve worked hard but I also believe that success comes from passion.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business today is compromised of both commercial and residential clients. Some of my projects include:

Venue Spaces for Live Nation, Celebrity Homes, Corporate Offices (both large and small scale) some of which include non-profit organizations i.e., Goodwill, Hollyrod Foundation and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. I’m also currently working on a restaurant in Los Feliz.

With such a varied client base and so many different types of projects, my work always has a simplicity and elegance to it. I love clean lines and I love simplicity. I also have a love for natural materials and textural objects which when overlayed on a “clean” canvas can make a space truly unique.

What were you like growing up?
I was a very shy, sensitive child growing up and was always more of a listener and observer.

I developed a love for drawing and painting around 11 but I always loved design and fashion. My mother was in the clothing business and sometimes we would design outfits together and she would sew them. I was always in awe of my mothers style. Today, she has a very successful home staging company in San Diego. My grandmother and great grandmother were also creatives. They designed and sewed clothes, crocheted beautifully and were culinary geniuses. The creative genes were definitely passed down on my mothers side.
