Meet Kayla Luu and Mira Marlink of Composed in Pasadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Luu and Mira Marlink.

Kayla and Mira, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We have always loved to write, so Composed started as a passion project of ours. As we finished high school and started the college application process, we could not help but notice some fundamental problems in the system: why was writing college essays so difficult? And why did help from professionals cost so much money? Luckily, we made it through the application process alive. We just finished our first year at Brown University and The University of Chicago. When the pandemic forced us to switch to remote learning, we had a lot of time on our hands. We were so inspired by all of the startups and efforts towards Black Lives Matter that we were seeing, so we decided to start a quarantine project of our own. Why not use our passion and shared experiences to help others with their writing? That’s how Composed was born. Our vision is to break down the boundaries of resource inequity, offer our empathetic perspective and experiences as college students ourselves, and support any student who seeks to enhance their creative voice and story, regardless of demographics.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, it definitely hasn’t been. Kayla and I knew that launching Composed would be a huge undertaking, but we had an idea that motivated us and time on our hands due to the pandemic. Kayla designed an amazing website. We relied on friends and family to help us spread the word. Now, we’re brainstorming how to take Composed to the next level. We want to make our services accessible to anyone who needs it, not just students that we know. I would say our biggest struggle has been marketing. We’re constantly brainstorming ideas on how to bring Composed into every applicants’ household.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Composed – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We offer essay editing services for college applicants, regardless of their demographic backgrounds. We always centralize our work around the needs of each individual student—whether that be through our editing services or one-on-one sessions. The ultimate goal of this company is accessibility, and we’re always looking for ways that we can grow as a company to fulfill this goal. Right now, we’re really proud that we were able to launch our Composed with Care Scholarship Program, which grants free college application help to those who typically don’t have access to these services. At the end of the day, we’re a couple of college students who just want to help others in any way we can, as we know firsthand how stressful and isolating the entire application process can be.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
LA is a vibrant, diverse city full of so many different people from all walks of life. We love the creativity and the liveliness of our city. However, we also think that LA is the perfect example of why Composed is so needed — the large socioeconomic gap, especially when it comes to education, needs to be filled.
