Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Ferguson.
Sarah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve honestly been a doula my whole life. I started off as a death and abortion doula and after college began to work the reproductive health as a birth doula which completely changed my life and the way that I engage with my work. For me, this work is first and foremost political.
As a Black femme working in public health, it is next to impossible not to see the disparities in formation.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Ha! This is birthwork, the road will never be smooth.
I think the hardest part of this work is realizing that it’s been coopted and that folks who need access to this form care won’t get it without large amounts of sacrifice.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We’re dedicated to urban reproductive education and combatting health disparities. We’re known for our political analysis of reproductive health and ways we arm our community with education.
What were you like growing up?
As a child, I had really interest, I loved to read, as a child I oscillated between wanting to be a mortician and an OB/GYN. I think I found the niche for me.
