Meet Davi Akei

Today we’d like to introduce you to Davi Akei.

Davi, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m from the Windy City, Chicago. Started singing for talent shows and weddings and ended up performing at the Chicago Theater. Started writing and performing throughout the city but life called for a change so I moved to NYC for five years. I wrote, produced, and created amazing videos, music, and started artist development. While in New York, I got the opportunity to work on the marketing team for the Empress of Soul, Ms. Gladys Knight. From there, I have been continuing to make music and produce until life took an even bigger leap and brought me to now LA. Now, going into my second year in LA, I have been blessed to get the Best Original Song for a Series at the Indie Awards, which I am still in shock and gratitude over. With me having the spirit to attract positivity towards myself and myself, I am open to the new and outstanding outcomes to manifest in the years to come while out here in Los Angeles. In the meantime, I do public health and administration now as a Day Job so that I can continue to give back to the community, as I have in this field for over ten years now.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. I have been met with a lot of opposition and setbacks, especially when it came to my career and my own self-esteem/worth. Doubt paralyzes the body, mind, and spirit in ways that rejection could never touch. I was very much in my way for a long time, but now that the roads are clear (thanks to a pandemic sadly) I’m able to give my all again to me and my calling which is to create music that not only challenges the mind but also ignited the heart.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am known for my soulful and passionate tone and alluring writing. Many people would relate my sound to a very New-Age Soul/ Pop Mood like in feeling. With my ballads like “Letting Go” and “Distance” my range and tonality are so freeing and honest to who I am. I am proud of my growth and willingness to try different sounds and textures when it comes to my writing and interpretation of my music. Songs like “ALLover” and “Assylum” show that more modern uptempo and relatable feeling which I plan to expand on more with my upcoming project.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Humility and Dedication. I know my strengths and weaknesses very well, so being familiar with them and yet conquering them, while knowing there is always more work to be done keeps me in a very humble state or mind. My dedication against opposition stands for itself. I have had more no’s than I could count… was almost at a point when I said no before the other person had a chance to… but now I welcome no’s. Cause it leaves space for the right yes to stand next to my vision and be aligned… not forced
