Today we’d like to introduce you to Marquis Hubbard.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Marquis. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Born on the Westside of Chicago in Rockwell Gardens. If you an 80’s baby from Chicago, you already know what’s going on! My grandmother coined me with the nickname Moo Moo. Born as an only child with no real father figure, my mother did her best while fighting addictions to try to raise me and provide a stable home so we moved to a suburb west of Chicago called Aurora. As years went by, staying together as a family became almost impossible so I had to be placed under the care of a foster family who helped change my life forever! My adopted family proved to be the single greatest thing in my life to this day! They challenged me to work hard, push myself to greater heights and to hold myself accountable for my questionable decision making as a teenager and young adult. Their influence helped me become a star 3 sport athlete in high school and attend college at Southern Illinois University of Carbondale. I am forever grateful for them. I’ve always loved sports and music. Early in my childhood, I had dreams of being Michael Jordan, like a lot of kids from the Chicago area but that never panned out. Music was always constant! The Chicago rap influence played a major role on me growing up. Twista and Do Or Die were constantly on repeat, along with my cousin K-Dogg cassette tape freestyles with my other cousin Big Mike.
I also can’t deny the influence Biggie, Pac, Snoop, Dre and Bone Thugs had on me as. Well after graduating college summer 2008, the country was in the middle of a depression and job opportunities were next to none so I ended up working security at a bar on the Northside of Chicago. That’s where I found the love of Dj’ing. My passion for it arrived quickly and so did the branding, moo1two(S/O my boy Jerrell). When I made my move to Los Angeles to pursue the craft more, I found a lot of roadblocks. Confidence being the single greatest obstacle, next was owning my equipment. I tackled them both as I spent the rest of my savings on purchasing a mixer and two turntables. The confidence grew quickly as I locked myself inside and just worked on the craft. I am not the typical DJ. I didn’t grow a vinyl record collection. I didn’t skateboard, tag buildings or perform on radio. You can find me all around LA at The Dime, Hollywood Roosevelt, Seventy7 Lounge, The Association, The Room, The Victorian amongst others!! The help of some legendary mentors in LA have played a huge role for me developing into the DJ I am now. Shoutout Marcus The Artist, DJ-ASIS, DJ Alizay, DJ Arkitek and my boy Nitrane. You can follow me on Instagram @ moo1two and check out my mixes on Soundcloud @ moo1two.
Has it been a smooth road?
HAHA! Not at all! LA is the city where dreams come to die everyday and most industries are oversaturated to begin with so you can imagine how it is for an out of town kid with nobody handing anything out trying to find his way. Lots of no’s, lots of fake connections and feeling out of place. LA is a big city with many different vibrations so it was tough to figure out where I belonged. Now with Covid-19 making it impossible to perform in public in the presence of people, the game has shifted to dj’ing virtually. So that’s an entire struggle in its on trying to adapt to creating an experience in front of a camera.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Moo1two – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I love being a DJ in LA. You are exposed to so many different people and genres of music its an amazing feeling to connect with people through that. I am a chameleon of sorts as it pertains to my style of dj’ing. I fit a number of different molds and I am proud of that ability. Being able to play for any crowd relives the pressure so it never feels like a job. 5 P’s, Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The energy and diversity are some of my favorite things about LA. My absolute favorite part is the many beautiful beaches up and down the coast! The least thing I like about LA is the traffic and cost of living. The cost of living ends up being worth it in the end though!
