Today we’d like to introduce you to Asia Lyneise.
Asia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I originally got my start with fashion at a very young age. I come from a family of artistic souls, dressers, and hustlers and I was always taught to express myself. Not only that but I’ve always loved clothes, from the way they looked to the way that the fabric felt and how they made me feel wearing them. I was always talked about for being eccentric and different, but I realized that I started setting trends and I never looked back. After college, I met a fashion stylist, Mo who took me under his wing and allowed me to assist him on multiple shoots for a local magazine called Ambassador. Once I got a taste of editorial styling, I knew that this would be my calling. I assisted for a few years while building my portfolio and clientele. Then last year, I was given the opportunity to be the lead stylist on Big Sean’s “Single Again” music video. From that video, I built a personal relationship with his personal stylist Van Van and she gave me the opportunity to help style Big Sean for his annual Don Weekend in Detroit, Michigan. Currently, I am still accepting new clients virtually and I am also working on some really dope projects that I can’t wait for the world to see.
Has it been a smooth road?
I would be lying if I said it’s been smooth sailing. Although my family has always let me express myself freely, my mom was not letting me go to college to study apparel and textiles. Even though I never received a degree in fashion design, I always made sure to keep my fashion sense high. Once I graduated from college, I couldn’t find a job, so not only was I in debt from college, I was unemployed and broke. Not to mention, I didn’t start making any real money with styling until I started my consulting business and charged what I was worth. However, the hustler in me allowed me to still work, create garments and style all while struggling with depression, anxiety, and growing pains while the closest people to me doubted me.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Asia Lyneise Styles story. Tell us more about the business.
Asia Lyneise Styles is an image consulting business that specializes in personal and virtual styling which includes services like personal shopping, editorial styling, brand styling, and celebrity styling. I think what makes me the proudest of my company is the fact that I literally did it on my own. I decided that I didn’t want to work for anyone and I didn’t want anyone else controlling the narrative for me but me. Not to mention I love interacting with people and genuine souls and I think that’s what sets me apart from anybody else that’s in this industry. I love to connect with my clients, I want them to know that they can trust me to bring their vision to life even if it means telling them that something may not be right for them. By taking the time to get to know my clients and genuinely building relationships with them, builds a trust level that money can’t buy.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
This is such a good question and it’s so fitting for the current world we live in. I do believe that there will be a big shift surrounding how we communicate with clients and how we bring our vision to the world. By this, I mean that a lot more things will be virtual. Virtual shopping will definitely pick up as well as virtual consultations and I think that the fashion industry will utilize social media platforms more than anything to stay connected. I also believe that the fashion industry will have to give credit to the dope black artist that are constantly setting trends but getting overlooked. Lastly, I know people are worried about what everything will look like after COVID-19 but I am a strong believer in shifting the narrative and adjusting to the new normal. This is the opportunity to go within and figure out ways to be innovative and keep audiences engaged.
