Today we’d like to introduce you to Jevon Cuthbert.
Jevon, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am “The Energizer”, but it didn’t start that way. I won’t take you far back, but most of my family is musically inclined. An uncle part of Maze ft Frankie Beverly, cousin with his very own label under Groove Control Productions, my other cousin John Whitehead part of McFadden & Whitehead, not knowing if the list goes on, but my family comes versatile. It may not mean much and I never use them for my progress, but they’ve all been a huge help to me in my career especially my parents. They are definitely #1 in helping my push.
Now to how I started, my mom actually forced me into the school band, which was the best decision she’s made. During this time, it took me a while how I wanted to run things with my music. I fell in love with DJ Hero and heard one of the few songs that changed the way I heard music, “The Number Song” by DJ Shadow. He is and will always be my favorite DJ/Producer and I really look up to him. Soon after, I went to SAE Institute to study music production and failed.
Luckily, I met some people to help pave the path for me as I started up as BRy (aka. Black Riyooda (name invented by my older sister))[Riyooda means “dreamer” in Somali]. As much as I worked on BRy, learning how to make music, it didn’t necessarily fit right with me. So, eventually I came up with RyChuu. After a while, I realized it didn’t only sit right with me, but even my peers saw the potential in the name. I gotta thank my little sister, I gave her the name “HenneCee” but she was the first person to book me as a DJ and she has seen me grow through my career.
After all the extravagant house parties I got a lot of trouble in for (sorry dad), I started to make name for myself and word of mouth. Of course, my mom was always in the background always telling people how amazing I was and sometimes whenever we did a small party together or had family over, they would use me for music. Then I went from house parties to bars, car shows and I almost made my next goal getting into a club, but my journey doesn’t stop here.
During the build, I worked at Street Set University and met one of my greatest mentors that still makes impacts in my life DJ Eternal “The Crowd Uplifter”. After introducing me to new venues, new techniques, tips, and tricks, he introduced to one of the greatest partners in crime that would change everything but also kept in everything we worked for, DJ Asthmatc.
He and a couple of guys we met later down the line and people we’ve already worked with, built our groups such as 10Fam Collevtive and B.O.K (Bangerz Only Krew). There’s so much more I could say but I gotta give love for everyone I’ve met and they know who they are.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was never an easy road, the complications of keeping up with school when I didn’t like it. The people that I worked with and they used me for their own advantage. People that I messed up with and can’t take back. Times where I couldn’t commit to the plans that I had in store. These were most of the things that made this road hard for me, but as I started to grow, I began to realize that we’re human. We’re always going to make mistakes, and you’re never gonna learn if you’re not ready to lose. So I take these lessons in everyday and use them as my drive.
One of the major problems I had was my relationship to music. Music has always been a part of my life and sometimes I would question it. Question if I want to continue my passion for music, but I try not to push it ahead of me, because not only am I so far in it, but I love music. I love hearing every instrument individually to really hear the song. So if you’re struggling, it’s your gain. Don’t lose that momentum and don’t force it.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Being a Producer/DJ, it speaks for itself, but DJing I would say, is my expertise. I specialize in blending where you can hear two songs together that you wouldn’t necessarily hear. This is what I’m known for and what I feel sets me apart from others. What I’m most proud of in what I do, I work for the music. What I mean by that is my love for music I speak that through the music I play. Everyone always wants to hear the latest hit and yes I’ll play it, but I want to either do something more with the song or find underrated songs that came out during that time that sounds like it would be a hit. I try to provide more than just what they want, I give something they wouldn’t expect. It’s still a curve though, as I’m learning sometimes it doesn’t work, but that’s what makes the process enjoyable.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I don’t remember much from my childhood, because I was always moving and there’s too much stuff that happened. However, in elementary I met my best friend Jojo, and I think that moment when I went up to him and introduced myself to be friends without hesitation shows how bold I am haha! Ever since then, we have been inseparable and have known each other for 14 years.
