Today we’d like to introduce you to Kris Londyn.
Kris, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been singing since I was ten years old. I didn’t know I could “sing” until my mom heard me singing in my room one day. I didn’t start taking it seriously until the 9th grade when I auditioned for a role in Godspell and I got it. I was so excited. I did many musicals throughout high school, but it wasn’t until the 12th grade that my life changed. My director said she knew someone who was looking for another member of their girl group. I auditioned and we were a perfect fit.
Shortly after, at the age of 18, we were signed to Atlantic Records. We performed everywhere and opened for many people we looked up to. As any group, we didn’t stay together and I moved to LA to pursue acting and work on my solo project. It was going to be in the Country genre, where I could go back to my roots.
When it comes to singing, I made it on Season 2 of The Voice, but I didn’t get any chairs turned due to my poor song choice. At that time, I was still listening to people say a black, female singer would never make it in Country music. So, I picked a Pop song. Wrong choice!
On the acting side, I have had small roles on Black-ish, Dear White People, and was in a commercial for 22 Jump Street. Although I love acting, singing is where my heart is and I am still determined to break barriers in Country music.
I love to see artists like Mickey Guyton, Kane Brown, Jimmie Allen, and Willie Jones making waves and setting records. I have released two singles that you can find on any platform. The first single was “Miranda”, an unapologetic, sassy and powerful song for the jilted who has a “right” to feel that way. The latest single is called “Bless Her Heart”. It’s for anyone who has moved on from a relationship but the new person in their ex’s life doesn’t quite understand. So, what’s the best southern way to tell a stupid person they’re stupid?! Bless Her Heart!
On another note, I created a blog and show on YouTube called Fashionably Fed. I want everyone to know that women love food and sports as much as men do. Check it out!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Absolutely not! I have wanted to quit so many times, but there is something in me that knows I am destined for greatness. You must first believe in yourself before anyone else will.
I have had the struggles of so many doors shut in my face. I have heard way more no’s than yes’s. The biggest struggle is remaining financially stable and being available for auditions. One time, I had to pass on a callback because I was booked on The Muppets as a featured extra role. Although it was featured in The Muppets premiere promo, it didn’t hold as much weight in the acting world as if I would have gotten the job from the callback. Unfortunately, that’s the risk you take when you are trying to pay the bills through background work.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am a Country artist/songwriter and host. I am known as Kountry Kris and the Diana Ross of Country music, for my big hair. What sets me apart is my big voice and personality when I’m on stage. I’m an entertainer. I always have been when it comes to being on stage. It’s the only place I feel at peace and at home.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would have chosen a song that showcased my voice when I was on The Voice. Also, I would have believed in my creative direction sooner in life.
