Meet Katie Burton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Burton.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Katie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a Los Angeles native with some time spent in a little town called Victorville. Haven’t heard of it? Its quite possibly the armpit of California. My story begins when I was born. See, I was born an Alcoholic. It started with the feeling of never having enough. Never enough toys. Never enough food. Never enough friends.

Then over the years, because this thing is progressive, it became never enough poison to numb me out. My active using story ended October 15th, 2012 after the sudden death of my mother sent me in a downward spiral. There was no getting out of that dark place unless I made some big changes for myself. I got sober. I got sober and found healing in the art of comedy. Stand up comedy became my outlet. I channeled my traumas. I channeled my life challenges my frustrations in the art of making others laugh. I distinctly remember my first stand up show as a newly sober woman. The anxiousness, the rapid heartbeat the fire within my body, it was exciting because this time I had to feel it all and I was ready! When I got my first laugh sober, it was the greatest high I had ever experienced.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Dealing with grief within sobriety has been a struggle for me. Heartache of any kind can make one feel like they are crawling through shards of glass with no way out. I got sober very soon after my mom’s passing and for the first time, I was feeling emotions at the highest capacity. At times it was overwhelming. At times, seven years later it still can be. I have watched many people die from this disease. Many people don’t get it. They just can’t grasp it. It is truly heartbreaking and is an utter epidemic. I am grateful that I have some pretty great tools now to get me through any emotional stresses I come across.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I work for myself. I specialize in comedy. I still have room to learn and grow but I feel I have something special. Fame has never been a goal of mine it’s honestly just being able to continue living out my truest passion and having fun along the way. If I get noticed or someone recognizes my talents, great but thats not what I’m ultimately after. I feel now, more than ever we, as a country need to find outlets that bring us joy. Its a dark time we live in and I really hope I can make an impact with my relatable, sensitive, honest, raw and sometimes raunchy comedy.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel it’s important to not let the industry instill fear in you. I believe I could be further along in my career if I just had more trust in the process. Everyone deserves success, just as much as I do, it’s just how we define success that differs. Having a drive and dedication, perseverance and the “one foot in front off the other” attitude, I think will get you far in this field.
