Introducing We Love Leimert

Today we’d like to introduce you to We Love Leimert.

Please kick things off for us with some background.
Founded as a Co-Op, March 2019, operating with a close-knit family-like environment; (Mychal A. Horn, Kaya Dantzler, Jared McGhee, Nijuel Porter, Toran Moore, Milan Wilkinson, Rachel Jackson, Brandon Walker).

KAOS and LA Commons collaboratively launched the initiative (We Love Leimert) with intentions for the organization functioning independently. We will be entering January 2020, self-sustainable and looking forward to many joint ventures in the upcoming year!

We Love Leimert creates sustainable opportunities for Black Millennial, Generation Z, Generation X and Elders within our community. We encourage each other to develop, design and implement new art & culture programming experiences in Leimert Park Village as a tool for economic development.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Our organization is based on changing the conversation of our culture in American History. We tend to view the common struggles as challenges, reframing the structure of each and every sentence we speak. There have been many challenges along the way and we appreciate and conquer them all!

Our biggest challenge is unifying people to work collectively as a team. Los Angeles is the “City of Angels”, “Hollywood”, “the land of opportunity” but we seem to all get caught up in our own ambitions and we truly forget the basic human need of “community”. The main goal is connect our culture and change the conversation by creating and egoless community!

We’d love to hear more about your organization.
We’ve created an Intergenerational Dialogue among Black Millenials, Generation Z, Gerneration X and elders of the Leimert Park community about the preservation, growth, and sustainability of Black Art and Culture in Leimert Park Village.

We develop a yearlong calendar of art and culture experiences, led by members of the organizing group and the community members of Leimert Park Village.

We design and manage an infrastructures to support live events, performances and experiences on People’s Street for Leimert Park residents and the South Central community at large.

We provide Leadership Opportunities for Black youth to build skills in the areas of event production, entrepreneurship, community organizing and design.

We strategically support current Community Initiatives, Small Businesses, Events, and Experiences produced in the Leimert Park Village.

How have your experiences growing up affected the work you do?
As an organization, our personal lives differ to a major degree. Growing up in LA wasn’t easy for any of us but we are finding a way to make it much easier and more accessible for generations to come. We all suffered from lack of opportunity growing up, our job now is to create opportunities for generations to come! We have all shown major interest in developing our community as we see the struggle to maintain it!
