Meet Kristi Scarrozzo and Tiffany Bowhay of The Curvey in South LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristi Scarrozzo and Tiffany Bowhay.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We’d say this all started a few years back while we were working together at a women’s retailer in Downtown Los Angeles. After spending a few months working together, we decided to quit our corporate jobs and start a small direct to consumer clothing company out of Tiffany’s living room.

In a short year, we outgrew the house and moved into our own warehouse, growing the business to over 1M in revenue and shipping over 50k orders! Our professional backgrounds were the perfect mix of business, product development and creative to handle all aspects of the company.

During the period of growing the business, the two of us handled all of the customer service. Chatting with women all over the US about life, relationships, families, and health inspired us to dig a little deeper.

We found that women weren’t shopping out of necessity, they were shopping to fill a void…shopping to feel better. The connections we made with our customers allowed us to realize that they didn’t have a space to connect with each other and open up about underlying issues, mental issues, trauma or addiction.

After witnessing this first hand, we started studying social channels and specific user patterns. We noticed that Instagram not only disrupted how we use technology daily, it added a sort of fuel to the fire of our already unstable emotions, exasperating any and every trauma we’ve never discussed.

We decided it was time to change that.

Has it been a smooth road?
There is no such thing as a smooth road in business!

We always joke with the question of “what’s going to be thrown at us today” since every day is different and you really don’t know what to expect. Owning a business is the endless game of “putting out fires”, adjusting and pivoting to keep things going and growing.

We wouldn’t consider them struggles but little lessons to learn from or pivots.

From the moment we started the business, we no longer had our single roles within large companies but took on every role of our company. From secretarial work to creating content, and ordering printer labels and shipping orders, the entire operation was dependent on the two of us.

Taking on every role of the business while managing steady growth was the first challenge we faced.

It took us a while to realize that we needed to make the necessary hires to assist so we didn’t fully burn out. It was a daily struggle to get to the point of asking for help but once we did it gave us the mental and emotional stability to really focus on the growth and transformation of The Curvey.

Please tell us about The Curvey. What should we know?
The Curvey is an online platform for women to start healthy conversations.

We’re building a community that encourages peer to peer counseling and connection on topics surrounding mental health and wellness.

At The Curvey, we’re reinventing social media to safeguard and cultivate your mental and emotional health with a members-only online platform.

Traditional social media platforms don’t prioritize mental health. We do. Our users are women who want support and to be supportive in real-time. They want to walk away from their online experience feeling better about themselves, not worse.

As a company, we are so proud of our growth. A simple e-commerce shop turned into more of a social movement for us. We’re here to build, foster and connect women on levels deeper than just shopping or clothing.

We’re looking forward to seeing The Curvey evolve as we step into this new chapter of business as we develop our app prototype!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is a great place for online and app-based businesses. As we transitioned from selling clothing to creating social connections, Los Angeles as a city has seamlessly provided SO many resources that helped us with both parts. Plus, it’s a fun city to be in to connect with creatives and business owners. We’ve found that networking within LA is priceless. You never know who knows who, and who will introduce you to the next person that will elevate your business.
