Today we’d like to introduce you to Freddie Huguez.
Freddie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I coached Baseball in Boyle Heights Parks for 20 Baseball seasons and two years ago I decided it was time for me to retire and bring something, new,and exciting to the parks that can help further develop Our youth particularly teenage boys ,and girls who want to further their dreams of baseball in a more competitive playing level. Many parents struggle with their kids trying to figure out how to help their kids get better at a more competitive level getting them ready for high school baseball or softball in hopes for a college scholarship.
I grew up one of these kids in Boyle Heights, played baseball all my childhood, and some high school as well, I wanted to make sure kids had a better and the opportunity to sharpen their skills if they wanted to. This would only push them to do better and succeed. I want parents to have better for their kids and I want kids to want better for themselves.
I started fundraising to put those ballplayers that had the desire to improve their skills and wanted to play baseball in High school and college. Hoping one day they could make it pro, I sent kids to Dodger Camp where they can have an experience they would never forget. Believing in them and showing them how close their dream is, Now I’m sending Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles kids to Dodger Training Academy in Redondo beach where kids can get taught by only the best. Kids will get one on one practice in Pitching if he or she pitches, hitting, and fielding, giving them confidence to succeed.
And once a year, LA City kids host a red carpet event with dinner and awards for those coaches, Mentors, and teachers that make a difference in a child’s life reminding those what stars they are, and how thankful we are to have them.
Has it been a smooth road?
Some of the struggles for me was raising funds, but I’m learning and my team is growing and together we will get better.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with LA City Kids – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Our group of volunteers at LA city kids focus on children’s education and Baseball. Were hoping to grow this program to every inner-city. I’ am most proud of the opportunity to work with the staff of the Dodgers organization to help make dreams come true.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Los Angeles is full of opportunity and full of stars not just in Hollywood but in our own back yards.
I wish kids could feel better about themselves living in the inner city. Recreation and Parks have a huge role in these kids lives. Insuring successful programs that focus on children’s needs is what makes a difference, but with the lack of funds the department is not able to offer some important after school programs that can help with our kids homework, but most importantly their social life and we’ll being because the programs cost the city,and in the end children miss out. Sports are not offered for 15 to 18 year old. For lots of teenage boys if you can’t keep up your grade you can’t play at Our schools causing them to give up on their dreams instead of helping them stay playing while enrolling them in tutoring as a measure to continue to play. It’s tuff enough being a kid,let alone being an inner city kid.
