Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Houston.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Courtney. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Everything really started for me in 2013 when I switched from being a business major to a fashion major during my sophomore year of college. Within the same year of me changing majors, I began my first ever fashion blog entitled CoCo and Jannell. This blog was created with a friend of mine who was also into the beauty/ fashion industry. I would style us and she would do our make up.
Fast forward to the following year when I was given an assignment to create a blog and update it weekly for more than half of my overall grade for a class. Initially, I thought I was slick and could get around the assignment by simple utilizing the blog I’d created in the previous year (Coco and Jannell). My instructor quickly shattered that plan and shortly after Thank God it’s Fashion was born. TGIF was my own personal outlet to recreate fashion from popular 90’s sitcoms and movies.
After graduating in 2015 and working at Nordstrom full time, my blog transitioned from being centered around 90’s fashion to giving simple styling tips and using my friends as models while styling them in a combination of clothes from my closet and theirs.
Today in 2019, my brand has fully transitioned from Thank God it’s Fashion to COURTDINATE. At first, I was more so using my platform as something I worked on for fun. Now, I still have fun but I am really focused on turning my passions into a paycheck. Image Consulting and Professional Organizing has become my new obsession.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This road has had some bumps and hiccups along the way for sure. One of the major issues is getting people to take you seriously when you first get started on your journey. The best remedy for that, in my opinion, is to stay consistent, always strive to go a little bit harder each day, and stay true to yourself and your vision. The right people will eventually notice your persistence and opportunities will gravitate towards you.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Courtdinate – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Through this journey, my company has gone through numerous transformations. The TGIF to COURTDINATE transition made me realize that I wanted to assist my clients to a greater degree. That styling them for an event or photoshoot was cool but I really wanted to use my gift of organizing to bring a level of style and peace into my clients’ homes. Initially, I only offered closet decluttering to my list of services but quickly realized that offering to organize a variety of spaces was not only therapeutic for my clients but oddly, for myself as well.
Today COURTDINATE is an all things fashion brand, meaning the focus has extended past just wardrobe styling. I specialize in Image Consulting and Professional Organizing. Coordinating or “COURTDINATING” a person from head to toe is nice but being able to help a client organize their closet and/or their home in order to make their life less stressful is much more gratifying for me and makes me the absolute proudest.
I’m thankful to be multifaceted and being able to make all of my gifts cohesive. Not everyone has the eye or the patience to be so dedicated to their clients.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m looking forward to introducing my brand to different people and platforms across the country and being a household name.
