Today we’d like to introduce you to Audrey Boros.
Audrey, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
One of the first things that people learn about me is that I am from Canada. I grew up in the forest on a lake with my nearest neighbors being far out of sight. It was peaceful, but as a child I always had aspirations to be successful in a big city. I come from a family of dentists so dentistry was a natural profession of choice. When my husband and I learned we had both been accepted to The University of Southern California for our respective professional programs, we packed up the car and drove across the continent. We fell in love with Santa Monica and although we left briefly to New York City for post-graduate training, we always knew we would be back. Upon returning, I had the opportunity to work in a fabulous dental office with the best mentor anybody could ask for and an amazing supportive staff who have all become my second family. When time came for my mentor to retire, it was a natural transition as I had been working at Heart Centered Dentistry for almost a decade. It was a win-win situation. She was happy to pass her legacy on to somebody she trusted and was familiar with, and I was so excited for this new opportunity.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
School is stressful and dental school is no exception. Suffice it to say after 13 years of post-secondary education including a Bachelor’s of Science, a Master’s of Science, a DDS degree and a Residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, I was ready to start practicing and putting my skills to work!
Heart Centered Dentistry – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
At Heart Centered Dentistry, we specialize in the patient experience. We know dentistry can be uncomfortable. We strive to go above and beyond to make everyone feel at ease. Just as every patient is more than a mouth, the mouth is more than just teeth. In addition to practicing general, cosmetic and biomimetic dentistry, I am board certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. This means I have advanced training in detecting conditions that affect the mouth ranging from autoimmune diseases to cancers. I am passionate about early detection of oral cancers, some of which are on the rise because it directly correlates with patient outcome. This is an area in which the profession of dentistry needs to improve and our office is at the leading edge, paving the way. At Heart Centered Dentistry we work as a team to ensure every patient receives comprehensive oral health care in addition to an amazing smile!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as being happy! For me, happiness is being around people and things that I love including my husband, Simon and one-year-old son, Parker and my three-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog Sir Chuvvy Bear II, named after my husbands first teddy bear. The rest of my family lives back in Canada – I miss them all the time but go back a few times a year to visit. I feel very fortunate because I am also very happy with my career. In addition to practicing dentistry, I have a pathology lab in West LA where I microscopically diagnose samples of oral lesions sent to me by other clinicians. In between time spent at the offices, I am an Assistant Professor at USC where I enjoy teaching dental students, specialty residents and hygienists about diseases of the mouth. I am blessed to be surrounded by people that I love both professionally and personally!
