Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandrine Bouton.
Sandrine, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a dancer from Martinique. I have been dancing since I was a kid. I started my professional formation in France, Montpellier from 2011 to 2014. It was essentially modern jazz, ballet and contemporary. I was a dance teacher as well from 2011 to 2015 (modern jazz, dancehall, kizomba). I worked in different dance companies in France, before leaving for a cruiseship Ponant Lyrial, for six months in 2016 as a professional dancer. I came in Los Angeles in order to realize my dream and be a professional dancer here. I had the chance to dance for some famous artist like YG, Iggy Azalea, Amber Rose…
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It wasn’t a smooth road, but I didn’t struggle that much. I think the difficult part was when I started my formation, I was already 20 years old. I had to deal with the mockery of the other students. But, I kept focusing on my goal, and I worked really hard to be the dancer that I am today.
Coming in Los Angeles wasn’t easy as well, because of the language barrier, the different culture, but it was my dream to be here, so I keep fighting everyday, and I’m really happy to be here, to dance here, and for all of the amazing people that I have met here.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a versatile dancer, I do perform in any kind of dance. In Los Angeles, I do mostly jazz funk, hip hop and heels. I dance in music videos and dance shows. I do as well choreography. I am actually the choreographer for Sonny Apollo, a singer with whom I work in live performance and music video.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I want to give a huge credit to Epse dance school in Montpellier, especially to Anne-Marie Porras, Rudy Bryans, Didier Barbe and Marie Christophe. They helped me a lot when I was doing my formation in modern dance, we can definitely say it’s family. A big thanks to Sylvan and Flexx, from Martinique, who gave me the love and passion for hip hop and dancehall. Thanks to Paris c show who trusted me for this amazing cruiseship and push me through the cabaret universe. And a big thank you plenty of love to Brooklyn Jai and Hamilton Evans who are my mentors here in Los Angeles.
