Today we’d like to introduce you to Raul Morales.
Raul, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After being in local bands playing mostly metal/hardcore music, I got back into my passion for playing blues and R&B. I became a studio guitarist for local hip hop and R&B artists. After a few years of that, I met my Buddy Dennis Alvarez through a mutual friend. He is a singer/songwriter out of San Gabriel. He was the person who really inspired me to get out there and start creating music of my own. At the time, I was spending a lot of time in Pomona, where there was a lull in the music scene. I began to write original music with a blues/rock feel. It wasn’t very well received, but I wasn’t very good either lol. I kept practicing and writing and then came the DBA. The DBA in Pomona was the first place I ever performed. That is where I met my friends Paul Antonio a Pomona comedian and Alejandro Aranda another singer/songwriter. The 3 of us began to organize and perform shows at different bars, breweries and venues at any place that would have us. After we started getting some recognition, we all strapped down and began to work on our craft. I stuck with the studio and trying to get out as many of my ideas as I could. That’s where I am now, I have four singles out so far and I hope to get some backing for a full-length album I am putting together.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not, the thing about songwriting that most people don’t understand is the mental space you have to put yourself in to create something truly close to the heart. Anyone can put a tune together and sing over it, but you have to really feel what you’re saying for it to come off as genuine to the listener. Sometimes that means putting yourself in a place that’s darker than you are accustomed to.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I have my singles up on all streaming platforms under Raul Morales. My newest single Is called “Back Again” featuring Dennis Alvarez and another amazing singer/songwriter Sophie Rae.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think my ability to not base my sound off of other artists and to not be afraid to be myself. Fear of judgment can’t really hold you back when trying to Express yourself.
