Today we’d like to introduce you to Lynne Vinkovic.
Lynne, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began this journey in the early ’90s with an idea of how I thought our florals should be sourced. I wanted to grow real roses, the kind you see in yards, the ones that have so much fragrance, character, and texture. I found land that I could lease and started with a small collection that has evolved over the years to coincide with trends. Today my fields contain over 1500 bushes that I tend to and grow everything by hand. Nothing at my farm is commercial or powered by electric, all by hand. I am completely sustainable and carbon footprint-free.
By definition, I am an urban Micro-Farm. I am Los Angeles’ only flower grower. I grow David Austin, Guillot, Antique, Climbers, and Kordes, to name a few.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Today, everything is on social media; It makes it easy for people to know and find out about you. When I started, it was so cumbersome to get my garden roses noticed. I also grow an extremely perishable product. I do not cold store my cuts; everything is cut and goes out the same day. This still is a struggle today.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I grow by hand field-grown garden roses for the cut flower. I am known for my “whips” as the designers call them. They are long arching canes from a bush I grow called Sombruiel. The cane sometimes has 10 or more roses along the cane. These are coveted by designers. This is a seasonal business April through November Market days are Thursdays and Fridays.
Another one is Ash Wednesday; it’s to die for, really.
What sets me apart? I am the only garden rose grower in Los Angeles
What am I most proud of? My tenacity, period.
What were you like growing up?
Big dreams and goals, not settling for anything. Work smart and hard, be the first one there, last one to leave
I’m not too good to do any job.
