Meet Hollywood’s Trailblazer, Lainney Dizon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lainney Dizon.

Lainney, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I got started in music after college working with Duck Down Records and Cornerstone Agency/The Fader. I was basically a street team member for the record label and lifestyle rep for Cornerstone Agency/The Fader. My biggest break was attending Revolt Music Conference in 2014. I met Roslyn, who was and is an incredible mentor. I was surprised that I had met another Filipina at Revolt. Most of the time, I’m the only asian woman at hip-hop events. 2014 was the kick-off for my company, Dizon Dreams, a marketing agency I created with my sister because we were so heavily involved in hip-hop we decided to combine two of our passions and skills into one company: hip-hop and marketing. Our tagline is “Every creative dream needs a dynamic team.” We recognize that everything GREAT and legendary requires a team, you gotta have the right people with you. After meeting Roslyn, she introduced us to our first client, The Pharcyde, Hip-Hop royalty to my eyes since I’m a big fan of the Golden Era of Hip-Hop.

Shortly afterwards, word got around that we specialize in social media and events and we ended up working with upcoming artists, record labels and local businesses. I ended up consulting for Rostrum Records, and they ended up liking my work so much that I was hired there full-time. I now work as the Marketing Director for all social/digital for our artists and label. Dizon Dreams then expanded into doing hip-hop dance parties, because dancing was our passion. We made it a priority to listen to our passions always, and that’s when The Drop Party started. The Drop Party is a throwback hip-hop dance party. We call it
“The Drop” because when you come through you gotta “drop it like it’s hot.” No wallflowers are allowed. I love what I do every day, and it’s crazy because you literally can have whatever you dream of. That’s why I always encourage my friends to dream big. Anything is possible with hard work and dedication.

Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing in life is smooth. Especially when you’re a woman! AND a minority! My biggest struggle was being underestimated, but I turned that into strength because no one expects this small Asian girl to do dynamic things. I cried. I moved back home. My bank account was negative. It’s all a part of the process.

My advice for young women is to have a clear vision of what you want. When you’re blessed with a vision, you gotta do whatever it takes to make it happen because ain’t nobody like YOU. Period.

Put in work. Invest in yourself. Live passionately. Follow your heart. That’s my advice.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I specialize in hip-hop and music. I’m known for my dance parties and working in digital media. Social media is my specialty. I’m most proud of our Drop Dance Parties. What’s different about us is we genuinely love what we do. When you love what you do, the work shows.

Who have you been inspired by?
My mother, because she dreamed bigger for herself and moved to America to create a brighter future for my sister and I. I realize now that I’m blessed to have the FREEDOM to dream. Some people are struggling day to day that they don’t have the luxury to dream. This is why I work hard because I know that I need to make the most of the opportunities I have been blessed with.

Other women who’ve inspired me include Beyonce, Yonce, and Queen B. I also have a strong admiration for Asian-America creators because I know how much resistance they faced in order to pursue their passions. Shoutout Sandra Oh and Awkwafina. I’m also inspired by female founders, Michelle Obama, J.Lo, and basically, any other boss babe who’ve followed her own path. Every woman shining her unique light inspires me.
