Today we’d like to introduce you to Antonio Gonzalez.
Antonio, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My love for photography grew in my junior year of high school, in the year 2012. Learning about photographers like Diane Arbus and Mary Ellen Mark led me to grow passion for this art. Capturing special once-in-a-lifetime moments with a click of a button seemed like an amazing art form to me.
Los Angeles has been the city where I have created most of my work. From portraits that tell a story to landscapes that display history, I try to capture a little bit of everything, emphasizing more on street photography.
Since then, thanks to the powerful tool of technology: social media, my work has been appreciated by many people including CNN journalist Lisa Ling, actress Kate Del Castillo, chef/restaurateur Gordon Ramsay, actress Salma Hayek, among others. Many doors have opened as well. I have had the opportunity to work with singer-songwriter Julieta Venegas, musical bands La Santa Cecilia, Tres Souls, as well as musical artist Yoke Lore.
Has it been a smooth road?
Despite sometimes being challenged with the weather and natural lighting (since most of my work is done outdoors), so far I would say it has been a smooth road.
How would you describe the type of kid you were growing up?
Growing up, I was always intrigued by television. A moving photograph in a big fat wooden box (we owned a very old television set that had no remote control even) seemed so fascinating to me. I remember always thinking as a kid, I wonder how all this film fits inside this television! I used to picture little munchkins working their butts off inside the television set, changing the screen by the second.
What is your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite memory from childhood I would say is when my family and I went camping for the first time, in Sequoia National Park. I instantly fell in love with nature and the beautiful scenery it displays. The smell of Giant Sequoia trees and marshmallows make me nostalgic.
What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future are to get my degree in photography from Art Center College of Design, and hopefully work in a television network such as ABC or Universal, and work my way into becoming a director of photography.
