Today we’d like to introduce you to Molly Gruninger.
Molly, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’m originally from Indiana, where I studied and worked in graphic design for a dancewear manufacturing company (aka the master’s program for everything sparkle). Painting, however, has always been my first love and ultimate goal, so three yrs ago I moved to LA where I hoped to find myself amongst some of my favorite artists. Despite having had to start again at square one, I finally have the chance to do the thing that makes me happiest in the world. The art community out here is truly one of a kind, and I consider myself very fortunate to be able to experience it firsthand.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My pieces explore the social and cultural evolution of humans through elaborate displays of self-expression. Ornamentation represents the human desire to communicate a persona via instantaneous visual cues.
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
There are pros and cons. Opportunities to reach a vast and diverse audience are greater than ever before, however, with that comes the challenge of grabbing the attention of a constantly overstimulated population. And though I think the economy still has some improving to do art wise, I think the saturation of incredible art is at an all-time high. In cities like LA, which is such a great cultural melting pot, artists are in the ideal community learn from and support one another. It’s always refreshing to talk to other artists and learn that they’re just as exhausted as I am.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I definitely think people should make a point to see work in person. It’s so much better! I often exhibit works through Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City and share my works and info about upcoming shows at @mollgrun on Instagram.
