Meet Megan Geer-Alsop of Megan Creations

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Geer-Alsop.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in Topanga Canyon, a little town nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains between the valley and the sea. I was raised in a family of actors and musicians and found my artistic niche as a visual artist.

I spent quite a few years doing art classes at Santa Monica College with a focus on ceramics and sculpture until I was ready to set up my own studio space at my home.

I am lucky enough to have a family that truly values the importance of art in our society and also, being artists themselves, know how hard it can be to get started. They helped me build the beautiful art studio that I still work in every day 20 years later!

Has it been a smooth road?
Making art and selling art are two totally different things. The making has always come easy but figuring out how to market myself has always been a struggle for me. Social media has definitely changed the landscape of possibilities for getting your work out into the world which I really appreciate and am still learning how to navigate.

Also, being a mom of two beautiful kids has been a great joy, but challenging to juggle with my work life. They are getting older now, so I definitely have more time in my studio than I did a few years ago. 🙂

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I do ceramics, stained glass, and sculpture. I love working with clay, so I will always do ceramics, but I specialize in making site-specific stained glass windows for businesses and homes. Doing commission work is very rewarding and helps me grow as an artist.

My favorite art pieces to make these days are the Stained Glass Guitar Lightboxes. I find well used or broken instruments and with stained glass, transform them into ambient light sculptures. I really love seeing how much people (especially musicians!) enjoy them.

I am privileged to own one of Megan’s lightbox pieces and am warmed by it every day.. She is a wonderful person, visionary artist, a great mom, and a pretty amazing singer of harmony, too.
