Meet Mark Posey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Posey.

Mark, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started making art when I was around 11 years old. I would make collages out of old comics and Mad Magazines and give them friends and girls I thought were cute. This is where my interest really all started. I continued working on art projects here and there but really got serious my senior year at UC Berkeley. I was there to study English but found that I was making art a majority of the time.

I decided that art was really was where the heart was, so once I graduated I decided to move across the bay to San Francisco to get my MFA from the Academy of Art. My senior year at the Academy I was lucky enough to win top contemporary painting prize at the spring show and got a little attention from galleries that way. One show led to another and I have been riding that wave ever since.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t know any artist who’s taken the smooth road. There are constant if not daily struggles of trying to find and maintain my voice and creative vision. I like to experiment once a month or so and work on the project completely unrelated to current work just to keep things fresh. Every now and again I surprise myself with something new I’ve learned and am able to incorporate it into other bodies of work.

Please tell us about Mark Posey.
I am mainly known for my paintings. I have done a few sculptural works to accompany some of my paintings, but I mainly stick with paint on panel.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Christmas morning. Wasn’t it everyones??
