Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Bartley.
Jay, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Dance is the bridge for me – it leads me to what I do for a living now. It took me a long while to be able to say I get to do what I love to do. I had been working in the corporate world since my early 20’s, sucking the life out of me, with no other alternative in sight.
Once, I made the decision to leave, my world began to open up. I received the 10 series in Structural Integration, Rolfing – and it rocked my foundation. I knew this is what I wanted and needed to be doing. I immediately enrolled in a 2-year program to get certified as a Structural Integrator.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Opening up a private practice takes a lot of energy, commitment, faith, a sense of knowing, perseverance and time.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a Certified Structural Integrator and the owner of Bartley Structural Integration -The Rolf Method located in West Hollywood, California. I offer the classic 10 series created by Ida Rolf or individual sessions based on my clients’ needs. Structural Integration is about working with the whole person as opposed to focusing on ‘parts” of a person. I introduce ease, breath and length to achieve a more functional and balanced body.
I was trained in structural bodywork, biomechanics and somatic psychology. I am proud to say that I am able to bring my history of the movement to each session, being a dancer allows me to see bodies with a different eye and bring another perspective to the table.
In addition, I just wrapped up my yearlong training in Pilates and will be offering training sessions come Fall 2018. An idea I like to give my clients is to evoke a sense of wonderment, have them experience their bodies as opposed to just having a body.
What were you like growing up?
I was a pretty quiet child. It took me awhile to come out of my shell so to speak. I was very athletic – I spent time doing gymnastics and playing in team sports like soccer, and baseball.
